xp from name board/ ss'ing

I know we have a name board, but I want opinions from my June Bumpies, since I like and trust you guys more. Deal with it. ;)

Looking for some help in choosing boy name alternatives. Baby's last name is Italian but fairly short. (Sounds pretty close to Barillo.)

We don't like trendy or super popular names, loathe "unique" names. We'd like something classic but not super-common, with a strong sound to it. Ideally, the name would have a nodding acquaintance to, or at least "go" with, one or more of our ethnicities -- Italian, French and Russian. (This could be very subtle, I don't necessarily mean names like Enzo, Pierre and Feodor.)

I LOVE the name Nicholas. DH likes it a lot, but hates the nickname Nick and isn't really feeling any of the alternatives either.

I've thrown out other options (some of which I like more than others):
Alexander
Steven
RIchard
Daniel
Joshua
All of which were rejected by DH for various reasons (too close to a friend's son's name, bad nickname, creepy second cousin's name, just not feeling it, etc.)

Any other suggestions that might work for us? Or feedback on Nicholas/Nick issue? I feel like Nick is such an inoffensive name, I'm sort of blown away that he dislikes it.

  • Too bad, I like your names a lot!

We had agreed on a boy's name but are having a girl.  It was Maxim after my Russian grandfather :)
    Some others:
    Andre
    Cyrus
    Peter
    Ruslan
    Victor
    Christopher (or variations thereof)

  • There's a family here with a Nicholas and they just call him Nicholas, so it doesn't get shortened to Nick very often at all. There are a couple older siblings of his that call him Nick occasionally but for the most part, I've only heard him called Nicholas.

  • I vote for Alexander - it's such a timeless name! Plus it's DH's name so I'm biased.

What about Igor or Boris?? :D
    J/K I'm Russian and I don't like 90% of the names.

  • If we had a boy, his name was going to be Andrew William.  I do like Alexander too.  That was another option for our LO.

So my hubby is Italian and his name is Nicholas Joseph!!!  I love the name Nicholas and he is Nick for short well to friends and co workers,  ( Nicky with family LOL)  yeah that is funny.  I like the nickname Nick I do not think it is bad at all.  He is actually a Jr as well.  I think Nicholas/ Nick is an awesome name!!!!  Out of the ones you have listed I like Nicholas/ Nick the best!! :) It would probably go great with your last name too.  We have a short Italian last name and Nicholas is great with it!!!

That's my brother's name. He goes only by Andrew.

OP I think if you set the standard that he is Nicholas and not Nick people won't call him that. I do like others suggestion of the NN Nico.

  • When my cousins were adopted from Russia they were Anatoli, Nikolai and Andre.

I love the name Nicholas, we have a cousin who calls her son Nicky (he's a junior and his dad is Nick) but I do like Nico or Nikolai as the foreign counterparts. Tell DH to suck it up ;)

  • He just doesn't like the "ick" sound in Nick. Nor does he like Nico or Cole. I ran the idea of "you call him Nicholas, and the rest of us will call him Nick," and he's considering it.

He may just need time to get used to it, but in the meantime I'm looking for other options just in case. He fell in love with our first choice girl name (Julia) and I think since he likes this not-quite-as-much it feels off to him.

    Names are hard.

  • @lunaC if it makes you feel better DH and I settled on a girls name right away but kept going back and forth on boys names (good thing we're not having a boy or he'd probably be nameless days after being born). So maybe if he sits on it a little bit, writes it out with the last name and sees it and the more he says it he might come around to it

  • What about Christopher? That's pretty classic and gives another option if hubby won't budge on Nicholas.

You could also do something a little more traditional Italian like Giovanni, Georgio, Antonio, Vincenzo, etc... My BFF loves the name Salvatore although I'm not crazy about it. To each her own ;)

I like pp's suggestion of Nicolai too- adds a little flare!

You don't like unique names- does that mean you aren't going to like my little Hadley girl?! :(
  • I love Nicholas too, I would just nick name him Nico (Neek-o) instead of Nick. My second choice would be Luca. Third would be Dominic.

Dammit I just saw he didn't like Nico. Why are husbands so difficult! lol

  • I like Nicholas, but it could be because I have a brother named Nicholas :) we tried the whole only calling him Nicholas thing because my parents wanted him to always go by that...once he was old enough, he chose to go by nick mostly, so that didn't work for us. ...side note, my other brother is Christopher and the only calling him Christopher thing didn't work for him either, as he chose Chris once he got into school haha

Sorry I don't have any other boy name ideas though, they're so hard for me :( I'm pretty sure we're going with declan if we have a boy, but I let DH pick cause I have no boy name ideas. (Declan is Irish though, so that's not much help to you)

  • We're naming our LO Dominic, nn Nico but Dom would be another option since your H doesn't like Nico. Other Italian sounding names we considered: Anthony, Luca, Marco, Sebastian, August (Gus), and Roman.

If he loves Julia, could he like Julian?

THIS! I was just about to suggest Julian! Its a great alternative to the name he loved for a girl.
  • I don't have any additional suggestions, but... I know a Nicholas who is most certainly NOT a Nick. I don't know if it was a decision his parents made, or if he made the decision when he was older, but his name is Nicholas and no one calls him by anything else. If you hate the nickname, don't use it! The rest of the world will follow suit.

Of course, when your little one grows up, you lose control of the nickname choice, but you always have a choice in what you call your son.

Hadley is fine, just nms. I would hate it if you spelled it Hadleighah (teh final "ah" is silent.) That's what I meant by "unique."  ;)

To the "Julian" suggesters, he considered that, but wants to leave Julia as an option if we have a girl later -- which I think makes sense. We both love it to pieces.

  • I'd stick with Nicholas if you both like it.

Were you considering the French pronunciation?  (Nee Ko La) I think Neeko (or some other spelling) is a nice nick name for a boy.  It sounds masculine to me and would be acceptable in Italian too.

  • I'm Italian and big names in our family are Michael, Robert, Anthony, Salvatore, if that's any help. I like Michael a lot.

  • I vote Nico. : )

I was going to suggest Giulio...(however that is spelled!) but Julian works too, as PP have suggested.

Good luck convincing hubby! We totally disagree on boys' names, too, even though our girl name has been set for months.
