Cloth Diapering

Prefold Question

I tried using the search function but didn't find anything about this. My question is when do you decide to go up to the next size in prefolds? Is it by weight, or absorbency or something? I'm not sure which brand of prefolds we have (we bought them second-hand) but we have a small size (they have blue stitching on them if that helps) and a large size (no colored stitching). L is currently wearing the small size jelly-rolled with a snappi during the day and she is probably approaching the 14lbs. mark (I will know for sure how big she is at her appt. on Monday.). Sorry I can't be more clear about details, but any advice you guys have would be great. Thanks!

Re: Prefold Question

  • We have been in the same prefolds since birth, but I plan to go up when I can't easily snappi them anymore. If you have to change very frequently, like every hour, I would also move up to the next size.

This. Until they don't fit well anymore, or until LO is out-soaking the absorbency.

  • Yup, when they were too small to snappi.
  • We started trifolding when they got too small to snappi and haven't had any absorbency issues yet.
  • We use GMD prefolds and moved LO up from NB to small when the NB were getting too snug for her. The small prefolds are too long for her but we fold them down and its a much better fit.

  • Yep, for the most part pre-folds have the same amount of fabric in the center panel, it's mostly a size issue.  You can try different folds for absorbancy.

  • We trifold ours, so the size didn't really matter.  We switched up when she would soak through them peeing once.  She must be a super soaker, because we always had to switch her up before the recommended weight for the diaper.  She just had a big bum for a few weeks until she caught up to the size :-)
  • For us it's been mostly absorbency. Bigger prefolds hold more. While I could still technically trifold a GMD medium for DD, she would end up with a wet high chair at dinner. So we use larges now.

  • Ok. Thanks everyone. :) we will probably stay with the smalls for a couple more weeks and then go to the larges and just fold down the extra.

  • I'm not sure if this is helpful, but we switched LO out of the small sized pre-folds when they started to repeatedly leak at night.  He's about 18 pounds or so and lanky - the medium sized ones look like they are too big but they definitely hold more pee and the leaks are gone.  It also seemed like the diapers were getting heavier and heavier when I would change them in the same time interval.
