Appointment Frequency?

I am curious as to how often everyone visits their OB & when do the number of visits increase?

I recently moved to a new state & have a new OB and she isn't seeing me for 3weeks from last appt. I'm 35weeks now & will see her at 37. Then she said at 39 & then 40. I thought I was supposed to be going every week?

Also do y'all do a urine sample each time? I've had 0 at my new OB but used to have them routinely at former OB.

Thanks so much for any help/input y'all can give me.

Re: Appointment Frequency?

  • At my office they have you come in monthly until 34 weeks, and then it's weekly. I have been going weekly since 30 tho due to being high risk. They donurine at each visit to check for protein, etc.

Typically It's monthly until 32 weeks. Then biweekly until 36 and then weekly until baby is born. They do a urine sample every time.

This is how it is worth my OB office, except we have yet to do a urine test - I'm 31w5d.
  • I'm seeing a trend it varies from doctor to doctor? I've gone monthly until 30 weeks, bi-weekly (every two weeks) until 36 weeks, then weekly until 40.

  • Mine is monthly until 30 then bi weekly until 36 then weekly. They do a urine sample each time. I'd love it if it was bi-weekly until the very end! Too many appointments and too much schedule juggling with it being weekly for 4+ weeks.
  • Mine only tests urine if there's cause (e.g. infection or pre-e suspicion). I'm still at monthly appointments, but at 35 weeks will do one every two weeks - unless (again) there's cause for greater frequency.

Thanks ladies! I guess not being seen often isn't a huge deal, I just found it so odd & wanted to see what other places did. I guess my concern is things changing (dilating, cervix thinning, baby flipping, protein in urine, etc) & me not having a clue.

I think being a FTM I was hoping for more appts just in case anything changes so I can have an idea of when I'll have this little one, but when it's "GO time" I think I'll know... I think?! Haha!
  • I have beeen going weekly because of high blood pressure, but she would see me that way at 35 weeks anyways. They have done a urine sample at every appointment from the beginning.

  • I go every other week right now I've been doing this since I was 28 weeks. Then it will go up to every week I believe at week 36, that's when he said they will begin the internal checks BLAH !

  • I went monthly til 34 wks. Now it's every 2... Not sure when we switch to weekly... I think 38? I think if I were high risk it'd be different, but so far appts have been pretty boring (just vitals and measuring) so I guess I don't fuss with wishing I had more as I've had no issues. It'll get a little more exciting at 36 wk appt w the swab and I believe cervix check ;) and no urine checks for me except the 8 wk blood work!

  • I've been coming in every 2 weeks since I was 30 weeks.  I'm not sure when I switch over to weekly. And as far as the urine samples, I leave one at every single appointment.

  • It appears that every OB office does it a little differently. I have an appointment in two weeks (before it's been every four weeks). I'll be 35w then. Then after that I'll have them weekly. They start weekly appts at 36 weeks but since I somehow ended on a odd number, I'll technically start weekly ones at 35.
Also, I bring a urine sample to every appointment from the first to the last.

  • It's kind of weird how they do it at my ob's office. It's every 4 weeks until 32 weeks, then you're on a 3-2-1 schedule. So it's 32 weeks, 35 weeks, 37 weeks, and then every week after that.

  • I did every 4 weeks until 35. Then I will go 37, 38, 39, and 40. My doctor isn't very worried about me. Nothing has ever gone wrong and have had easy pregnancies. She says if I want I can come in at 36 but its not a huge deal.

  • I have given a urine sample at every appt, but I was also told from the beginning that it is not what all OBs do, but the preference of my OB. At 28 weeks I started going biweekly. And at 34 (last week) I was supposed to go every week, but my cerclage is scheduled to be removed in two weeks so he said he would see me after that. I will see my regular OB again at 37.5 weeks.

  • I think if you feel uncomfortable you should try to see if any other practices are around, call and ask how often they'll see you! It won't hurt to call and find out.

  • I went monthly through 30 weeks.  Then going back at 33 weeks.  I believe she said I would come again at 36 and then weekly through 40.

At my first appointment, she said I would come monthly until the last two months and then come every two weeks...but it looks like she changed her mind.  I'm 34 y.o. and haven't had any issues in this pregnancy to date, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

They take a urine sample to check for protein every visit.

  • I guess I will hold out until my 37week appt and then tell her I'd feel more comfortable going every week after. I am also going to ask the nurse to do a urine test & mention if they can check my platelets bc they had been consistently dropping/were low at my former OB. I am a military spouse so I am stuck that this place unfortunately. :(

This is the norm, I believe!
I think cervix checks are in the near future at the weekly appointments, also!

I now get to go twice weekly due to my bp being high. They want to monitor me more closely and do weekly NSTs.

It was supposed to be once a month until 30 weeks but my office is so busy and booked up that I ended up coming every 6 or so weeks.
30-36 weeks, visits every 2 weeks
36 weeks on, visit every week.
    Urine sample every visit.

On top of that, MFM was for specific tests in the beginning (4 visits). Then growth u/s monthly starting at 28 weeks. And NST every week starting at 32 weeks.
A whole lot of appointments to keep up with!
