Tell me about your birth control

Really, I want to know your experiences with essure, IUDs and/or nexplanon.

I am going for my 6 week pp appt today and need to decide on birth control. DH was going to get a vasectomy, but since we have an HSA, we would have to pay out of pocket. Birth control options are free for me, though.

I'm leaning towards nexplanon because I am really scared of the pain to get an IUD inserted (I'm a big baby). But, I need more input. So, tell me about what you use for
long-term or permanent bc.

  • dh got the snip.
I have a friend or two that have done essure & are pleased.
  • I had a Mirena IUD, umm...I think I got it at 8 weeks pp.  I loved it, just had it removed because we plan to TTC #2 in the next couple months.  Honestly, I am THE biggest baby.  My pain tolerance is ZERO.  And the IUD insertion was nothing.  It was a small pinch, then over.  I will say that I had some very slight pain over the next 24 hours but it was completely bearable; I don't think I even took anything for it.  I had some spotting for I think like 2 months but it was minor and then nothing.  I didn't have a period the entire time I had it.  Removal was also painless, seriously, just a quick pinch.

  • I have Mirena.  Honestly it did not hurt much at all.  A little cramping and that was it.  I did have spotting for several weeks, but I was expecting that.  I get random spotting but nothing too bad.  I essentially don't have a period any more which I love.  I've had it for about 1 1/2 years.
  • We use pull n pray.....but I've heard a lot of horror stories about mirena IUDs. My sister had it perforate through her uterus into her abdomen and apparently that's not all that uncommon. She had surgery to remove it. She had the arm implant after that and liked it. I thought about the essure, but it has metal in it and I have metal allergies. Apparently some women have developed allergies to it after it's already grown in there. So, it's all out for me. Not worth the risks.

That's how we got #3. Well, that, and one too many glasses of wine.

    Abstinence. Heh. Poor DH.

But really my plan is condoms until we decide if/ when we'll TTC a third.

Abstinence sounds good to me. PP sex sucks for a while for me.

  • We practice NFP with abstinence during fertile times. It's easy, cheap, and effective (when done correctly). And I love that it doesn't involve taking extra hormones.

  • I got my Mirena IUD at 8 weeks PP (DD is 17 months). I've had no issues. Getting the IUD inserted pretty soon after having a baby is easier and less uncomfortable than doing it at a later date since your cervix is still somewhat soft and open. I definitely had some cramping for a few days afterwards, but that's about it. I get light spotting once a month that lasts just a few days and so far, no pregnancy, preforation, or heavy bleeding.
  • BFing is an effective form of birth control for us, but doesn't work so well for everyone.  My cousin is expecting her second, if she goes to her EDD her babies will be 12.5 months apart, so that's how ineffective it is for others.

    DH got snipped.

    Before that, we used condoms.

  • I can't be on estrogen, so I was on the mini pills. They are touchy and you a have a three hour window you have to take them. I don't know what we'll do for long term birth control once we are done having kids.

We did that after DD1 was born and had good luck with that until I had a wonky cycle and ovulated early. I ended up getting pregnant, but ended up having a miscarriage.

We use condoms for now and so far haven't had any surprises. Although I don't think either of us would mind

This for us too. I'm lucky in that my fertile signs are pretty easy to identify, even if the lengths of my cycles can vary. It's worked great for us so far, and I also love knowing what's going on w/ my body.

There are rules to using BF as birth control. Some women can get away with not following them; others can't.

For example, you need to be solely BF (no bottles at all) and no pacifier use. You need to take a nap with baby every day. I forget the other guidelines. If you follow them all, you have a good shot of being annovulatory until 6 months pp. After that, all bets are off.

    @mylitlesunshine
That won't happen to us. We practice abstinence until ovulation is confirmed by temp shift.

I've never heard the thing about taking a nap with the baby. All I've heard is its effective for the first six months if you are exclusively breast feeding with no artificial nipples and not going longer than 6 hours at night without feeding.

  • My baby came with a proximity alarm-he cries as soon as his parents try to cuddle. We will use condoms until I'm regular enough for natural family planning. Assuming I have an opportunity for sex before menapause, of course.

  • Condoms right now. Nuvaring maybe? I have one but am at a war with myself about using it. Don't want all the extra hormones again. We will see.
  • Thanks for the info ladies! After discussing with my OB, I decided to go with mirena. Fingers crossed all goes well.

  • We will be relying on bfing and the fact two small children make sex difficult at best. We want three though so it's not the end of the world. Dd1 took for ever to conceive so I'd imagine we will use NFP when we are ready to be done. I have no intention of ever returning to hormonal bc.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

BFing has also worked for us. She's 15 mos and I still haven't had a period. I was just at the OB last week so I know I'm not pregnant. I realize I will ovulate before AF returns. Obviously, it's not for everyone.
You might ovulate before your first AF or you might not.  I had my first AF after DD was born, it was at 15.5 months postpartum it seemed to coincide with dropping down to two nursing sessions.  DH and I wanted to have another so I started charting right away.  The first month I did not ovulate, the second cycle I ovulated but my LP wasn't long enough to support implantation even if we had conceived, but after that we were good to go.
  • I have the nexplanon. I love it, I was going to get my tubes tied, but they "forgot" during my c section. Blah blah emergency blah blah :) I hated my Mirena. Fell half out, meet DS 2 eleven months after DS 1.
  • I am most likely getting the tubes tied during the RCS.

I have no experience on the ones you listed, but I will say I did not like the Depo Shot. I was a psychotic bitch, I was having difficulty dropping those last 10 lbs, and I am pretty sure it is the cause of other TMI things. The no periods was the only nice thing I have to say about it.

  • BFing, pull and pray, and watching for fertile signs. We are pretty sure we will be done after this guy (our 2nd) is born and DH will eventually get snipped if we are still certain in a few years.

Well, now you've got me reading stories about IUDs falling out and I'm scared. I do not want a #5. Maybe I should reconsider the nexplanon. Do you spot often with it? After DS2, I used the mini pill and spotted nonstop. My OB thought because of that, mirena might be the better choice since it goes directly to the source.

I just had Essure done a little over two weeks ago. I haven't had any complications with it yet and no pain related to it. I have to go back in 2.5 months to make sure the tubes are closed. It is great because they do not need to cut you open or anything, and you do not have to worry about going to the doctor all the time for it, or remembering to take it every month.
