Already having ultrasounds?

Hi y'all! This is my first pregnancy and I know exactly when baby was made - Dec. 30th. When I called to make an appt with my OB, I got one Feb 13th. So I'm super confused - how many weeks will I be then, 7? I think I'm in my fifth right now. Will I hear a heartbeat then? What should I expect? I'm reading all of your posts and wondering how you know so much so soon!

Re: Already having ultrasounds?

  • I am with both of you. I know when I conceived because I had an IUI done on 12/30. I don't have my first ultrasound until 2/4 but I am hoping we get to see a heartbeat.  So I totally agree with @yurizaba you should be in your 6th week. Good luck to you!
Me 29 DH 30 Unexplained IF TTC since wedding May 2012. IUI #1 11/5/13-BFN.  IUI #2 12/5/13-BFN. IUI #3-12/30/14. All three with Femara CD 3-7 and Ovidrel trigger. +HPT 1/13/14 First +ever!!! Beta #1 195 Beta #2 1/15-533. Ultrasound on 2/4 showed one bean. EDD 9/22/14. Team Green turned Team Blue-Baby Conner arrived on 9/19/14.

  • The weeks can be confusing for sure. When you are 5 weeks and however many days, it's your sixth week. (Just like when you're 25 years old and 3 months you're in your 26th year). Welcome!

  • I always google "pregnancy weeks calculator."  Then you don't have to the the math when you want to know.  Most people do not get ultrasounds until much later...just means they are not worried about you.
  • My appt. is the same day as yours and I'm also 6 weeks today. It depends on your doctor, but mine will do an early ultrasound to date the pregnancy since dating is most reliable during this time. The past two times I've been pregnant, we were able to see the heartbeat but did not hear it. We heard it at the next appt. around 12 weeks.

This is my first too and I was also surprised how far out the appointments are. But when I started looking up info online I realized it was fairly typical if they aren't worried about you. So I try and take some comfort in that. So far my first appt isn't until the last week of feb, I'll be 10 weeks by then. They still have to set up bloodwork and u/s appts for me before then but I'm thinking they will be far out there too. So hard waiting! I think once I actually see it then I will really feel pregnant. As it is now this could very well be some crazy stronge psychosomatic issue with sore boobs lol
  • I had and early appt. and u/s (at just over 5 wks) due to my last pregnancy being an ectopic. But I know if I didn't have previous history I would have been seen until around 7-12 weeks. Perfectly normal.
  • I had my first ultrasound yesterday because I've had a previous loss and I had some bright red spotting around 4weeks. We saw the heartbeat but the doctor said if we had gone in even a day or two earlier it wouldn't have been beating yet. So I guess it starts usually around six weeks?
  • I had an introductory appointment with my OB at 5 weeks but that was just to make sure I was taking care of myself, that there were no medical issues that we needed to work with and then blood work. My first REAL appointment with US is February 26, when I'm 11 weeks. Can't wait!
  • Your pregnancy is calculated from your LMP, though having a good idea of when you conceived certainly helps :)

It just depends on your doctor, re: ultrasounds. I see a group of midwives and they typically only do one u/s around 20 weeks unless there is a real reason to do any others. I was surprised the first time around, too, by how hands off they are during first trimester, but honestly, there's not much they can do but let you suffer through it :)
