Midwife revealing sex by accident?

Hubs and I already have a boy and a girl, so we thought for our 3rd and final baby that we would keep it a SUPRISE.. (So not like me.. I have the worst patience!) the ultra sound lady said she determined the baby is just 1 sex at our 20 week ultra sound, and it's obviously now in my records. I'm freaking out that I'll get all the way to 30 something odd weeks and a midwife will say by accident 'oh another little boy/girl' haha! Has this ever happened to anyone?!

  • Hmm I didn't even think of that! Thank you!
  • My MW told me that the US report doesn't include the sex, so if we wanted to find out it was then or never. Not sure if it works the same everywhere, but maybe it does?

  • We let the ultrasound tech know at our AS that we didn`t want to know. She said that they don`t even look in that region unless the parents request it and it dosen`t go in the report. We were told essentially the same thing at our 20 wk ultrasounds for both out other two LOs as well. Not sure if procedure is different here (I am in Canada).

  • My OB told me that the sex isn't in my chart at all. The only person that would know would be the sonographer, and obviously she has forgotten by now. I don't know if that is true for everyone though. I was worried about that too.
  • My MW spoiled it with my first pregnancy.  It was a total airhead move and I was super upset.

We had *just* had our scan and went in to meet with her.  She was flipping through the chart and said "Oh, fun - you are going to wait to find out!" Then two minutes later, she said "so you guys will have to decide what to do about circumcision" OMG.  I think she was reading from a checklist of things to discuss and just wasn't really thinking.  Our faces were in shock and she tried to cover it by saying "oh - that's IF it's a boy of course..."  but it was too late.

I haven't heard of this happening to anyone else so I don't think it's that common.

  • The sex is written in my chart...

I think safest thing to do anywhere you go is mention right away before anything is done that you dont know and dont want to know the sex of the baby. That way there is no accidental revealings.
  • The sex must be in my chart or was in the scan report bc my midwife walked into our appt after my anatomy scan and said "Congrats! What great news, a little girl!" (Which wasn't a big deal obviously since we had already found out/wanted to know) I think pp suggestion to ask them to put "surprise" in your chart is a great one! And it wouldn't hurt to remind your midwife, care providers etc at the beginning of each appt that you are waiting to find out.

  • When I was born ultrasound wasn't readily available so I was a surprise. When my brothers were each born, it had already become routine. My mom had the same OB for both of their deliveries and he told her both times, despite her asking him not. He was really arrogant but she loved him anyway. He was just like, "Oh come one you need to know!"
