Pelvic Pain: Anyone else? Any ideas?

Over the past couple of days, I have been having pain in my pubic region. At first, I thought it might be a bladder infection or UTI, but I described it to dh and he didn't think so because it is more to one side.  It has seemingly gotten worse.  It feels like a really horrible bruise, but almost like an internal bruise and seems to be much worse when I stand or walk.  I am pretty well ok when I am sitting down but standing/walking is painful.  Of course, I have been googling and the only thing I can conclude is that it may be pelvic girdle pain or SPD.  I did not experience this with DS1.  Any ideas?  Does this sound like PGP or SPD? Any ideas on anything to do to help it?  I will bring it up at my next appointment with the OB, but that is a week away.

Re: Pelvic Pain: Anyone else? Any ideas?

  • So sorry you're dealing with this.I've been having similar pain as well. Mine is centered in my pubic bone, but it can also include my hip-joint. It feels like the soreness you get if you ride a bike for too long.

It's caused by the weight/gravity difference of the growing uterus on your various internal mucles of the hips and pelvis. My midwife recommended wearing a maternity support belt for 1-2 hours in the morning and night. Don't wear it too much becuase it can be counter-productive as your muscles may begin to depend on the support. She also recommended doing strenthening exercieses for your pelvic floor and lower back. It's really helped me, but the cold weather just aggrevates it.

Warm baths and compresses are wonderful, and try rolling around on a pilates ball.

Yes!  This is exactly it!  That is even how I described it to DH.  Either that or from riding a horse.  Thanks for the suggestions. I will give them a try.

  • Yes, that's exactly what I'm having. Hurts like a B! Sitting for long periods is the worst for me.

  • I have SPD this time and had it last time. It feels like someone kicked you in the crotch. Try to move both legs together when getting out of bed or out of a chair. if you have a desk job, try to get up and walk around.

  • I started with this on Sunday. I planning on a support belt after i talk with my MW tomorrow. I have some unresolved diastasis recti from DD which I think may be contributing to the instability. I'm doing yoga, but if this gets too bad I might look into some physical therapy. There is a practice that specializes in women's issues affiliated with my MW group. I would think they could teach me some exercises about strengthening he support muscles.

FWIW (may be a coincidence) LO made a big move last night from up and down to more sideways and my pelvis is feels a lot better today!

  • YES! Are you doing the waddle when you walk too? I have a MW appt next week but mine is central and towards the left. Are you having trouble sleeping? I have been putting a pillow between my knees and that helps a lot...unfortunately the waking hours/walking/moving are uncomfortable.
  • It is really more just when I am walking that it hurts.  I can't move very fast.

  • I am having similar pains. I told my OB and she said it's completely normal in second+ pregnancies because things are looser. She also said it's a good sign that your body will open up for baby when the time comes. :)

Well, at least that is some good news since I am trying for a vbac.

  • The same pain here too, left inner thigh/pelvic and lower lower abdomen.  I called the Dr. this morning and she said it is probably round ligament pain, cause that can travel down your inner thigh/groin area.  She said to make sure you put your feet up and don't do anything to strain it.  I sit at my job so the only thing that helps is to sit still, but I can't for too long, I feel like my ass bones are digging into my chair......wonderful, isn't it?

  • Yes! This started for me about a week ago and at first just felt like a bruise over my pubic bone. It has gotten to the point where it hurts to walk and roll over in bed now. I don't have a docs appointment for another 2 weeks so I'll ask about it then. DH is a physio and keeps saying he will take a look but he's musculoskeletal/ sports rehab and has never done anything in women's health so I don't know how much help he will be.
  • i forgot to add this in my previos response: when sitting, always try to elevate your feet. I acquired a simple box which I now keep under my desk at work, so I can raise my feet to parallel with my hips. It helps, but it's still a good idea to move around every hour.

Also, when sitting try to keep your feet/knees/hips/shoulders in straight parallel lines. My natural tendency is to let me hips relax and my knees splay outward. The MW advised against it because it can aggrevate the already sore areas.

hope you ladies find this useful/helpful.
  • I got this with my son, they told me it was SPD. But I didn't get it with him until I was at least 30 weeks or so, and this time around I am already dealing with it, which seems too early...but oh well.

I haven't really figured out how to make it better though, unfortunately. I just suffered through it last time. Sleeping with a pillow between my legs would definitely help for the mornings but it got worse throughout the day.

  • I have the same thing and my OB said it's just from your uterus growing and hips expanding.  He suggested making sure you drink enough water.  Stretches also help but don't alleviate it completely.

  • I posted about this earlier - the post ended up getting taken down. My midwife told me that I really need to exercise and stretch all those muscles and that it should help. I have been doing kegels a few times a week, walking on my stepper, and stretching. It seems to have eased up the pain. I also sleep with a pillow between my legs and it seems to really make a difference. I forgot the other day and regreted it in the morning.

Good luck, hope you feel better!

  • I've had pretty severe pelvic and back pain since about week 18. I've been doing everything my MW recommended and it's getting a little more bearable. Not sure which of these has helped the most but this is what I've been doing:

    - pelvic support belt

    - weekly chiropractor visits

    - bi-weekly pre-natal massage

    - liquid calcium/magnesium every night before bed

And then I try to make sure I'm sitting straight up, both legs on the ground and not crossed during the day. I got a support pillow for my office chair too that helps with that.

Pelvic pain really sucks. Hope you find something that works for you!

  • Oh, you mean that kicked in the vag feeling? Yeah, I'm with you! I'll mention it at my OB appt next week, but take some of the PP advice in the mean time.

  • Those of you that have a support belt, which one did you get.

A friend had one from MM that she said wasn't very good so I've been looking on amazon. Any feedback would be appreciated!

@chknma I got the Baby Belly Band abdominal belt and compression therapy groin bands. It's not magic but it does seem to help so I've been wearing it whenever I workout.

  • SPD comes on later typically with the first pregnancy and sooner each pregnancy. It was my first sign this pregnancy at 4 weeks. :'( The way I describe it is it feels like someone took a white hot machete and hit me dead center of my pubic bone. For me I cannot do exams with speculums without excruciating pain while pregnant so ask they be gentle if they have to do them. PT didn't work for me, only a chiropractor. I wear a Maternity SI-Loc belt. I also limit asymmetrical movement like stairs, sweeping, mopping, etc...
