June 2014 Moms

Opinionated MIL

So I'm currently 21 weeks, due June 8th, with baby #3. Today I had my anatomy ultrasound, and clearly saw a very not shy baby boy!! My MIL came over this evening to see the pictures and find out the baby's sex (she didn't want to hear it over the phone). She came in bearing gifts, and when I opened it everything was pink. She says (I just know in going to have another granddaughter). My husband and I didn't say a thing, just handed her the pictures. The look on my MIL's face was priceless!!! After recovering from her moment of shock, she laughed and said "well I guess I need to go shopping again"

Re: Opinionated MIL

  • Lol. Love this. My mother in law made a pink blanket (she crotchets) because she just knew it was going to be a girl. Now she's making a blue one for our boy. Lol.

  • Yeah she did handle it well. She had 5 boys, no girls, so she loves having granddaughters!
  • My MIL thinks its a girl, my mom refuses to say because she doesn't want to be wrong LOL. Luckily nobody has done shopping for specific items except me. So id be the only one returning items at this point.

That's awesome she handled it so well! When I saw the title I kind of went "uh oh" in my head.

  • My MIL was sure ours was a boy. I actually thought so too, and it is, but her smugness about how she just KNEW it was a boy kinda made me hope for a girl, haha.

    Finally Pregnant after IVF

  • I know sooooo many mothers & MILs that have done this! Instead of having an obvious preference, why can't they wait until told?! It's just hurtful or stressful for the parents.

I'm glad she "took the news" of having a healthy baby grandson well ;)
  • I am glad she took the news good.
I have not told anyone when I go for my big appointment because I know everyone will be asking or texting me. So I told my husband not to tell anyone and we both are keeping quite on the big appointment. I don't think anyone has bought anything yet.
  • Oh jeez, lol. My mom, husband and stepson are all totally convinced LO is a girl. If the u/s tech sees a boy in there I know at least from mom and stepson we are gonna get some mildly disappointed responses and it makes me wish they never told me they had a "feeling" or preference!

Glad your MIL had some humility about the whole situation!

  • My MIL was obsessed with us having a girl from the moment we told her we were pregnant. She has two boys and her sister has one boy, who now has two boys haha It hurt my feelings in the beginning because I felt like she wouldn't be excited for a little boy (which we're having). She seems more excited now but I'm sure she's still feeling some disappointment ugh
  • My u/s tech told us she had a patient recently who had done her entire nursery blue, bought all boy clothes etc. (She had never had an u/s done for some reason.)

Then, late in her pregnancy they needed an u/s, and the tech told her it was a girl. Patient didn't want to believe it. "It can't be a girl -- my mom told us she KNEW it was a boy, and my mom is never wrong about that."

Well, she was this time, honey. Good luck changing your nursery and all your baby items from boy to girl themes!

(This is also one of the reasons we like gender neutral theme even if you know the sex.)

  • At least she handled it well! My mom and sister joke around about my "little girl" even though we don't know yet. I know they won't be disappointed  either way, they just want me to have a healthy baby. My MIL on the other hand doesn't even talk about my pregnancy, just a "how are you feeling" once a month.

My mom crochets a blanket for each grandchild and when my oldest sister found out she was pregnant last year, my mom bought both blue and pink yarn.  My sister's H desperately wanted a boy, so my mom started on the blue yarn first.  Well, lo and behold they had a girl.

Then my middle sister got pregnant and since my mom already had a blue blanket done, she was hoping it would be a boy.  Nope, another girl, so she had to go buy more yarn and start on another blanket.

So then I got pregnant and we all thought I'd have a boy because of how many boys are on H's side.  I called my mom after our a/s and she just asked "Do I have to buy more yarn?" which I just laughed and said "Yup!  It's another girl!".

Geez, I'll take the blanket off her hands -- she must be tired of looking at it by now. ;)

  • HAHA!  I secretly hope my MIL does something like this and we end up having the opposite.  We're team green and it's driving her up the wall....that's not why we're team green, but it's an added bonus.  *evil laugh*

  • Same here @FutureMrsW. I'm not gonna lie, my MIL's obvious annoyance at us being team green by saying "but I HAVE to know so I can prepare!!" makes me secretly even more excited to be team green.

  • My MIL wants to be Team Green even though my husband and I decided that we wanted to find out the sex. She told us that we can't tell her when we find out. She's throwing the baby shower so I'm not sure how she's going to remain spoiler free when things on our registry will make it obvious. I'm hoping she'll change her mind before our A/S on the 10th.
  • Awesome mil! Mine doesn't really care only to give useless opinions that don't make sense
