when do u take LO to dr? (Fever)

normally take LO that day he starts running a fever or the next. He's not real fussy this time though. He was feverish before bed last night, so I gave him IBP. He woke at 2:40 am and was 100.3. I gave him some meds and cold water and he went back to sleep, fitful for a bit then settled down.

I checked him again after the meds wore off this morning and he's 100.3. Since it's not really a fever now and he's not very fussy I'm on the fence about a dr appointment. Might wait and feel it out.

What do you do? Do you always take them to dr when they start running a fever? Or do you give it a day or so to see what happens?

  • I give it a day or so.. the pedi told me to wait three days and if it hasn't gone away, then come in, but I think that's too long.

Are there other symptoms besides a fever?  The pedi also told me they will run a fever before other signs of a cold appear.

  • My Dr said the same thing as PP, if it's a low grade fever and no other signs then wait 3 days and come in if not gone. But he told me if it's a high grade fever (anything over 103) then I should bring her in. I would wait if it was DD and see how he acts today. Could it be teething maybe?? When Em teeths she runs a low fever with no other symptoms. GL hope your LO feels better soon!!

  • I'm thinking and hoping teething. Molars should be next, I hear they r a pain! I'm praying it's not a cold or ear infection. He just got over one last month. My pedi hasn't mentioned how long to wait but I thought I'd heard three days on here. Last they told me was at baby stage come in at 100.4. :) thank you.

  • I give Tylenol if over 100.5 and take him to the doctor if over 102.5. I hope your LO feels better!
  • I second what @icarriedawatermelon said. Fevers aren't bad. They are a sign that your child's immune system is responding. Current literature says there is no reason to treat a fever if the child is acting fine. I am pretty relaxed about fevers when there are no other symptoms and everything else is normal. That being said I took N last week after 12 hours because he had a fever of 103.4 and was clearly not feeling well, plus not eating/drinking much (ended up with horrible ear infection). I also work in a pediatric ER so I see fevers a lot and yes most of it is viral. At this age it's okay to let them have a low grade fever for a couple of days. The "rules" are different now than they are at the tiny baby stage.

  • Well LO has been fussy and crying most the day and low urine. We was out for the day and very hard to deal with. On way home I looked back and saw in his mouth while he was crying. It looks like either strep throat or thrush. I got home and looked around his mouth. Gums swollen from teething and a lot of white and red spots in his throat and mouth. Not on tongue.

I should have taken him in this morning - nows to late and I feel horrible. I don't go to ER around here they are useless from other ppl I've heard. If he was 103+ I'd go prob. But he's not.  He seems to have a low thresh old for pain and at 100.4 he acts like an adult man with the bird flu or something!

I'm trying to treat both (thrush/ strep throat ) at home until I can get into a dr tomorrow morning. ... I should have followed my gut because now I feel like a dog. :(

  • If it's low grade we wait 2 days unless he's not acting like himself. Once we hit 101 or more with other symptoms we go right away.

@lanea8712 don't beat yourself up. Just try to make him comfortable and get him to drink something. Try pedilyte drinks or ice pops.

  • I have never taken my girls in for a fever and I don't treat unless it gets to 103.  Fevers are your bodies way of treating itself.  Many viruses can only live at certain temps so the body raises the temp to try to kill the infection.  By treating low grade fevers you can actually lengthen an illness.  We "treat" with Elderberry syrup which is an immune support and keep them hydrated.  If there are other symptoms I would consider bringing them in but a fever alone doesnt warrant a Dr. visit for us.
