11 month old twin.. just stops showing emotion?

My son and daughter were 12 days early, over 7lbs each..

at around 10 months Riley (DD) just stoped crying or showing emotion. She won't get angry or fuss when hungry, if I put her int he crib at night she will just sit and stare at the wall or stand waiting. She is under treatment with Easter Seals for development ( just started sitting unassisted) her upper body has no muscle tone. And she's lost 3 lbs in the last month (17 lbs to 14lbs last week)

We have a nerological appointment with Childrens in Boston on 2/27... But someone tell me I'm not losing my mind that showing no emotion is not normal. Everyone I talk to seem to think she's going thru a phase. She won't smile, she won't laugh.. She use to. She will crawl, she will talk (dadda) and acknowledge her name or if you have something she wants. But it's like she can't be bothered and just gave up.

My son has been walking since 10 months, crawling since 7 months and claps and feeds himself (also 25lbs) So I have the extreme on both sides. And I know it's hard to not compare..

Breaks my heart.

  • That sounds so heartbreaking. I have no advice, but you are not crazy for making an appointment to get her checked. I'm just curious, how does she do when you have alone time with her? Does she seem to perk up a little if she doesn't have brother around to compete with? Please keep us updated! Prayers for it being nothing!

  • She will play on the floor like normal and babble. She will even ty to crawl to Carter and play with him. It's just the lack of smiling, crying or laughing. She acts fine.

Except when she's playing with a toy and stands and falls over, what would scare a baby or hurt and should cry out she seems stunned and goes on with what she's doing. Her eyes sometimes sway back and forth also.

  • Good thing to get checked out, it is better to catch things early :) there is a good chance it is just part of her personality for now, but if it isn't then at least you will have some support.
  • That must be so hard to watch.  I hope you get some answers.

  • <3 I am sorry you are going through that. Emotional, intellectual, and physical regression are all warning signs of a potential autism spectrum disorder, can be caused by injuries, or other serious changes in health - it *could* just be a phase, there is no need to panic - but any kind of regression this early on is very important to bring up with your doctor. Please try not to be frightened. Be proactive and directly address your concerns with your pediatrician. Be adamant that the change in emotion is new, a regression from her previous emotional behaviour, and request evaluation. Evaluation of her overall health means earlier intervention if she needs it, and peace of mind if she doesn't.
