July 2014 Moms

Diaper question from FTM

So the DH and I are starting to talk about how we would like to diaper our LO. My question to all the other moms is how many diapers (on average) does a newborn go through on a weekly or monthly basis? How about a toddler? I know I will be changing a "lot" of diapers but I have no concept of how many that actually means so it makes it very hard to look at cost of going with cloth or disposable or the 17 places in between :-)

  • Also, even if you use 1 cloth diaper a day, you'll still save on average of $200/year

  • ew ONE cloth diaper a day...

That chart is about right. We're doing a hybrid of cloth since DH isn't on  board, but I'll likely not leave the child more then a couple of hours a clip, two nights a week, so most likely it will be mostly cloth. I also liked having the option of disposable if I was on a long trip or in a place where'd I'd be stuck with a collection of dirty cloth things for any length of time (or wanted a good nights sleep- the 12 hour over night ones are really nice). I went the prefolds and gusseted covers route to make it the most cost effective plus was told by a friend that was the way to go and it wasn't bad.

  • For us it was about 10ish when she was a newborn, not at almost two it's about 6 a day.

  • We used disposables for the first 2 months and then switched to cloth.

One thing that I remember vividly is that though we may have changed DD 12-13 times a day, there were many occasions when she would have poop shooting out during changes and we'd go through several diapers just trying to change her.

Nowadays, at 22 months, we use about 75% cloth. A big box of disposables from target lasts us a couple months. We may change more frequently than most too because dd is prone to rashes and redness.

  • We used like 10-12 a day when he was newborn. At 2 years old we use 5-6 a day.
pretty much the same for us as well.

Every baby is different.  I honestly don't remember the number of diapers we went through when C was a baby.  But, if you're look for reference on savings in the cloth vs sposies dept this is a pretty good chart on Target's brand

This is also a great calculator, however your savings will vary depending on the cloth diapers you choose

Wow. How the hell is my 2.5 year old still wearing a size 4 diaper? He's a little skinnier than normal but pretty average size.

My 2 year old is in size 3...she's tiny.

We probably go through 40-50 diapers a week right now

  • You may want to visit the cloth diaper board on here for advice & to help compare also. We CD'd DS2 for 2 years & only spent $700. I still have all of his diapers in great condition & waiting to diaper this little one so overall the diapering will just about be free. I need to buy a couple of more diaper covers to replace two he had that I really hate.

  • I don't know how you cloth diapering moms do it.  Gross.  Especially now that my son's poops are so very putrid.  I cannot fathom the thought of washing his diapers.  They have to be double bagged and put in an outdoor trash can asap.

Newborn poops aren't bad at all, especially for breastfed babies... that I can almost consider for cloth diapering... but now, NO WAY.

  • I think that chart is realistic for up to 6 months, but both of my girls were VERY unhappy I'm wet diapers. Even right up until potty training, we were probably going through 8 (or more) diapers a day through age 18/24 months. I think each child is different. Better to overestimate than under.

  • I used disposable diapers with DD until she was out of the newborn size, and then switched to cloth. She's still using the cloth diapers, and they look brand new. I did a review for the diapers I use, sunbaby cloth diapers... here's the link:
