Baby Wearing Advice

So our commute every morning involves a walk to the train and then a walk to daycare, the whole thing takes about an hour and a half. I've been using the Ergo since we started because it's hard to get the stroller up and down the stairs and now that we're on the Path instead of the subway there aren't even emergency doors to use so I'd have to lift the whole stroller over the turnstiles.

Anyway the problem is my back is killing me, L insists on leaning all the way back the entire time rather then snuggling in and gets pretty angry when I try to coax him into sitting up better. Is my back just going to hurt after that much straight babywearing no matter the method or is there a different carrier that would work better? I've thought about back carrying him but I'm nervous on the train, it would be hard for me to make adjustments mid-trip and people push so much without looking that I hate to not be able to defend him with my hands like I have been. Anyway any advice would be very appreciated!

Re: Baby Wearing Advice

  • In your situation I would wear my frame hiking backpack. That way Lo could see everything and the frame would protect them from pushy people. People will hate you for taking up space but that's nothing new for any mom who has used public transport with a baby, right?!
You'll still have a hard time with adjustments mid trip but I can reach behind me easier to give them something like a mum mum or a paci easier with the frame pack than the ergo.

  • Hm I never even considered those. I'll have to look into them, thank you!
  • So I don't have this one, but I just googled to see what was on the market (ours was a hand me down, nothing special) and look at this crazy thing:

You would be making a ton of friends on the PATH with this contraption!

  • Ha! Oh my gosh I can just picture the looks and grumbles I'd get, people already get grumpy at the Ergo! Still, that thing is sort of brilliant in it's own way.
  • +1 for the hip carry!  I put J in it when I'm just trying to get things done around the house and she likes it MUCH better than the front carry.  I will say that my shoulder does start to hurt after awhile, so it may be less comfortable than the front carry.

  • Another one for a hip carry in the ergo! When my LO isn't ready for a nap he hates being carried on the front, so I put him in a hip carry. He can see around a lot better and it's pretty easy and comfortable.

  • I'll have to try the hip carry out, I hadn't considered it for commuting honestly. L really likes the Ergo, he just prefers to lean all the way back and have his head up. No idea why, especially since it's COLD! He'd be way warmer if he cuddled in.

He also basically ignores me the entire time he's in it but lights up when I take him out like he didn't see me there. It's the strangest thing!
  • I have a bad back from a car accident. My woven wraps are much more comfortable because they got perfectly to me. Plus they offer a variety of carries which help ease the pain. They're pretty and take up less space in your bag too.

  • Thanks @blt20051 Do you have any suggestions on the best place to start researching woven wraps? I honestly only know what I've read on threads here.
  • I also would go for a woven... you can do a million different carries with them and find one for you that is comfy. I haven't been wrapping that long and i'm already completely obsessed. Its also not bulky at all. I would start by joining the babywearing swap group on Facebook. You can also join Babywearing 102, which is more of a support group on FB to get more info on different carriers. :) Thebabywearer.com is another great resource.

    Perfect, thank you!
  • We have the osprey poco plus for hiking. Your LO would definitely be protected and it's pretty awesome, but might be a bit overkill for commuting. The ergo side carry sounds like a good place to start. image This is not my DH or LO, but it gives you an idea of size. image
Haha yea, probably overkill for commuting. I would sort of like to see people's faces though...

I totally want this. I am a hiking and camping gear whore though. My garage is out of control! :)
Does that area under the baby's butt open for storage?!
