Question genetic testing/ insurance updated in a reply

I had Materni21 blood work NT scan, chromosome testing and one other test done I can't remember the name.

I was told by my insurance when I called last Jan that I didn't need approval or anything for genetic testing. The lady said " you have very good insurance".

Ok so I figured the testing is covered by my insurance.

Dr told us that the Materni21 blood work if insurance didn't cover would be around $200.00. We decides to do it without calling insurance since we have good insurance it is probably covered and if not it is not much out of pocket.

Well come to yesterday. I got a bill from the lab. I opened it. My balance due 2/4 is over $1,000!!!!

The entire bill was about $3,000

Really??? OMG!!!

I have to call tomorrow and see what is going on.

Has anyone else had a surprise like this?

I have NYSHIP blue cross blue shield.

Thoughts?

I dont have the same insurance but the first bill that I got was $2000, I didn't pay it right away and got a revised bill a few weeks later for $200.

There should have been a second page in your bill that mentioned a patient assistance program. Call and ask for billing department. Ask about the program, they should reduce the bill to $200 immediately. I just went through this a week ago. I also had a CF carrier test done that they reduced from $800 to $25.

Mine from September is still pending with my insurance, the amount billed is over $3000. However I don't expect to pay that. My doctor said that if I got a huge bill to call the lab and they will reduce the price to no more thatn $200.

Called the lab  down to $200 with no issues, I just called and said that the Dr said it would not be more than $200 and she put me on hold and came back and said ok we will discount your bill to $200!!!

Way cool, cant believe how easy that was.

I had the Maternity21 test and the bill was over $2000. I was told the test would be free. I called the company directly and requested patient assistance (everyone qualifies) and only had to pay $200.

yeah that is what they did for me.  I was just in shock at first since Dr said the most would be $200.  Crazy!!! lol

Wow! I would definitely call your insurance co and talk to them. My MD wrote the reason for my maternit21 test as the lovely "advanced maternal age" and I only had to pay $200. My insurance covered over $1000.00+
It's an expensive test but worth it :)
    Good luck!

I just called and checked and was told my insurance does cover in full under some maternity act/law. It just started getting approved as of January. I guess I can consider myself very lucky and hope more insurance companies are doing this.

ladylisalt yes most do cover I think now.  I have very good insurance but still had to pay $200.  But $200 is better than 3,000!!! lol  It would be great if all insurance companies covered it!!

hmmm makes me wonder if I will receive a bill for $200. If so, I will try to appeal it.
