TTC After a Loss

ectopic pregnancy question

This is a question for anyone who has suffered an ectopic pregnancy. How long did you bleed afterwards? I recently suffered my second ectopic pregnancy and I’ve been bleeding a light flow for the past 13 days with no stopping in sight. My first ectopic was 9 years ago and I don’t remember bleeding for this long. I’ve told my RE and he doesn't seem too concerned. Should I be concerned?

Re: ectopic pregnancy question

  • I haven't had an ectopic like that but I do know that you can bleed for a long time after ectopics. I was treated with MTX for a weird pregnancy and I bled on and off for like a month, and they said it was normal. As long as you're not bleeding heavily for a long period of time, if your RE says he's not concerned I wouldn't worry. And they probably told you this, but in case they didn't, you generally aren't supposed to put anything in your vagina or bathe/swim while you're bleeding after a loss.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

My ectopic was resolved with methotrexate, so my experience may be quite different from yours, but I started bleeding on 6/24.  Then I received three doses of MTX on 7/8, 7/15 and 7/22.  All in all I was probably bleeding for about 6 weeks.  My HCG levels were finally back down to 0 on 9/9.  My bleeding was typically pretty light, and was only heavy for 2-3 days following each MTX injection.

I hope that your bleeding stops soon so that you can begin to heal.  Thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I had an ectopic pregnancy last year that resulted in surgery (though they did save my tube). They did a D&C at the same time because I had been bleeding for so long (just like a PP stated). After surgery, I bled for 11 days though my doctor said to expect bleeding up to four weeks. I got my first AF after 28 days and it was very heavy as well.

Call your doctor if you are concerned! They are there to help you and may help ease your mind. Be sure to get plenty of rest and take it easy. T&P!
  • I just had an ectopic pregnancy. I got pregnant in Novemeber but, didn't realize it because I got what I thought to be a period but it continue on and off for the month of December. Finally gut instinct me had me take a pregnancy test. I went to the hospital and the rest is history. I stopped bleeding about a week post-D&C/surgery. Hope this helps.

With my ectopic loss at 8 weeks, I had had light spotting throughout the month before I ended up in the ER. I didn't start actual bleeding until four days after my lap to remove my right tube, but once I did it was a good week or more of heavy bleeding. My doctor was actually surprised it didn't last longer, he told me it could be weeks. If you're just having light bleeding, that sounds pretty normal and non-concerning, especially if that's confirmed by your RE. My doctor had said he would only be concerned if I was filling a pad every hour, and that it takes some time for the uterus to shed so much lining.

ETA:  In reading your siggy history, I couldn't help but notice that you've been doing clomid/IUI cycles.  Did you never have an HSG to check for blocked tubes?  I'd be concerned if your RE moved you to doing treatments without having done all of the traditional testing and explorations that would have alerted him to those blockages

I did have an HSG done before we started treatment. And we didn’t see any issues. My left tube appeared pinched at first, but they had my move my hips and that seemed to do the trick to let the dye flow through. I had anticipated that my right tube (where my 2004 ectopic was located) would be blocked, but it appeared normal in the x-ray. It wasn’t until the lap that we discovered how damaged my right tube was. The OB who performed the surgery described my right tube was “black and mangled”. DH and I were told to make an effort to not get pregnant naturally because we run the risk of a third ectopic.

  • When I had my ectopic, I bled a lot. I bled with what I thought was my period before I confirmed a BFP. I then spotted off and on after about 2 weeks. By the time everything was said and done, I bled medium/heavy for two to three weeks before surgery. I lost my right tube and my doc did a D&C as well. I stopped bleeding pretty much after my surgery. I think I had one day of bleeding and then a few days of spotting. Everyone is different, I just did most of my bleeding before surgery.

  • So sorry for your loss.

I had an ectopic back in July which was treated with MTX.  I had some spotting one day and they did two scans before they could confirm ectopic.  I got the MTX the same day it was confirmed and started bleeding a week later.  Mine was about the same duration as a normal AF which is about 5-6 days.  I may have spotted a few days after that.  But my bleeding didn't last a long time though.  I will agree with PP that if you are not having ALOT of blood at once (my OB said to call him if I was filling a pad an hour) but since your doctor isn't concerned then I wouldn't worry too much.
