I need to vent...

So I signed up to teach Taylor's church school class.  Dylan refuses to go to her class so I get a bonus 3 year old who is too tired and cannot developmentally do things the Kindergartners do (cut/glue).

Most classes have 2 teachers to team teach or to alternate weeks.  I do not.

I have 15 kids on my roster.  DH works shift work and cannot be there 1/2 the time to take Dylan to church with him.  The room we are in is barely bigger than a bathroom, with poor ventilation/circulation.  Most kids are great.  1 or 2 hyper or non-listening kids make it seem like a long hour.

I have the kids do busy activities like cutting pieces and gluing them for 45 minutes and I'll read them a quick story.  We also have music for 15 minutes.  I must do something right because they return but it is so tiring!!!

And of course, they are always short on people to volunteer, so I do it.  My two younger kids won't stay in their class w/o me or Gma in there (MIL taught DD1 the past 2 years).  Every week I leave thinking I need wine, but I know due to my kids I know I'll do it again next year...

Tell me how crazy I am.

  • You and my DH are both crazy. That sounds pretty much like what he deals with, haha... well, minus the cranky 3 year old and plus a clingy almost 2 year old. :P

  • That's so nice of you. Your kids will outgrow it soon and they'll be off without you...it's just a short time (in te grand scheme of things) and what a blessing to those other parents! But yes...treat yourself to a drink. And maybe lobby for a bigger room?? Maybe you could combine with the 4s or 1st graders?? Just a thought :0)
Pretty much all the rooms are the same size.   :(
  • Wow. It's non stop.
Sorry if venting is offensive.  I have 3 months left for the year and needed to vent.
  • This is precisely what I felt like the year I had a practice-teaching placement in kindergarten. I was like, OMG, how am I going to keep them busy for the whole day?!

I think one secret is to not have them doing any one thing for too long, otherwise some will get bored and that's when you can start to lose control and it can get frazzled-feeling. So like instead of doing a 45 minute craft, maybe do one 20-minute smaller craft, then break it up with a story, then do the music, then finally have a second 20-minute activity that's different from the first one. Just a thought.
