Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Miserable baby

Hello,

my son is almost three months old and has been dealing with gas pretty much since he was born. I was unable to breast feed (managed for about a week and then nothing came out) and he has been on formula ever since. I started off with Similac Advance but changed to Similac Sensitive when I realized that he was screaming bloody murder every time he ate. The gas got better and he was so happy for a couple of weeks. Then all of a sudden boom wouldn't sleep at night anymore and has been miserable all day. He sleeps good at night time (from about 7pm - 130am, feeds and then usually wakes at 330am because he lost his soother and then sleeps again until 6am) but during the day he is absolute miserable and I don't know why. He eats normal, has dirty & wet diapers. I have to say he is an awful cat napper so he's mostly over tired, but he wants to be held all the time. Not that I mind holding him, but I can't do it all day.
Any suggestions?

P.S. I'm a FTM and I know it's not supposed to be easy raising children but I'm at my wits end.

  • Since you mentioned he screamed when he ate, has the pedi mentioned anything about reflux?  My best friend's daughter screamed and screamed and screamed for the first 3 months of her life, especially after eating,  until they realized it was reflux.  They put her on medicine and she was a completely different kid.

  • The doctor never even mentioned reflux. I always figured that babies puke lots when they have reflux, which he very seldom does. I have an appointment on Thursday so I will bring that up. The doctor we started off with, just up and left the clinic without telling anybody so the new doctor hasn't really had a chance to get to know us. I'll just have to pick his brain :)
  • There are different forms of reflux.  My DD2 has reflux but isn't in pain from it.  She just spits up a ton so medicine doesn't help her.  My friend's DD who I mentioned above had the painful reflux and didn't spit up at all.  The medicine helped her tremendously!  Good luck :)

You can try feeding upright, frequent burping, keeping upright at least 30 minutes after feeding, and sleeping on an incline (RnP or crib wedge) if you suspect reflux.  You an also do bicycle kicks, froggy leg presses, and rubbing tummy clockwise for gas. They sell over the counter baby gas drops that are safe to use and pretty effective.  If that doesn't work then you might want to rule out if your LO is having trouble tolerating something in the formula. Does LO have any other symptoms of a food allergy - like rash, mucousy stools, or redness around the butt?  And as previously mentioned you can talk to your doctor about reflux meds if you and dr decide it might be silent reflux.  Good luck.  I hope your LO feels better soon!

Edit:  And the way I got LO to not sleep on me all the time was by consistently putting him down when asleep in the same place. I'd put him down, he'd wake up, I'd then let him sleep on me (I'm a wus and can't stand to let him cry).  But eventually he got used to being put down there and will sleep even if he temporarily wakes up.  I first did this with the rock n play (night) and swing (day); and recently did it to transition him to the crib (night) and pack n play (day).  Might be worth a shot.  It doesn't work right away and takes patience but enough baby steps will get you to your goal.
  • Thanks everybody!

I've been giving him the gas drops and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. It's odd. He's a terrible burper, won't do it right after feeding but when he's ready which I try to discourage and get him to burp right after he ate. He doesn't have any symptoms of food allergies, he's been on the lactose free formula for a while now. And it's just so odd that this all started last Tuesday night and I haven't done anything different :(
  • My daughter was the exact same way for the first 8 weeks and constantly looked like she was in pain. Our pedi advised us to try soy formula instead is milk-based before we started any reflux medication. We started the soy that same day and within two days she was a completely different baby. Turns out she has a milk protein allergy and it was giving her stomach pains and horrible gas. Maybe that's what it could be? If that what it is, don't worry, 95% of babies grow out of it within a year! Good luck!
  • Oh my that sounds like my little guy. We have an appointment with the doctor today, so hopefully he can help us out.
I'm not usually like that, but I'm a little 'worried' about soy. Just from what I've read about it causing all kinds of horrie diseases etc. But I guess if it was bad , they wouldn't be allowed to sell it. I'm also between a rock and a hard place because we will be going to Germany for a month in February and I know I'll have to take his Formula but the Lactose free kind is easier to get than soy over there lol
