Newborn help

My son is 4 days old- hasn't pooped today, but really just started doing good, regular eating in the last 12-18 hours. He's been passing gas. Don't know if I should try gas relief med or gripe water or just keep letting him nurse (that's all he wants to do right now and he's been doing it for over an hour and I'm a little sore). Any advice?

    Passing gas is normal! I wouldn't give gas relief meds or anything unless absolutely necessary, as a last resort when all else fails. To relieve gas pains bicycle his legs, warm bath, tummy massage in a backwards "C".  Nursing for hours is normal and will be for a long time. For sore nipples let your nipples air dry after nursing (even squeeze some milk out yourself, rub over nipple and let air dry), lanolin cream or coconut oil. It will also get better. Just let him do whatever he wants even if that means nursing ALL day :)  Don't fret, it will get easier and it won't be like this forever, even if it seems it will be.  Enjoy your new baby boy!

    The 1st 2 months of their lives they can go days sometimes with a bowel movement. It happened to me and I freaked out. But the pediatrician said it was normal.

    My LO is 7 weeks and only poops every 2-3 days. She passes gas regularly, the doctor said it is completely normal.

    Follow up question: I'm a ftm and my DD is exactly one month today. It has been 7 days since she last had a bowel movement. How long is too long? I'm going to call our pedi tomorrow, but just wanted some insight. Thanks

    BF babies might not poop as often and this is normal. This quote is taken from Kellymom website. Kellymom is a great resource for breastfeeding mothers. Check it out!

    "After 4 – 6 weeks, some babies stool less frequently, with stools as infrequent as one every 7-10 days. As long as baby is gaining well, this is normal."

    to give your poor nipples some reprieve use a nipple shield. i can't breast feed without it. medela is the thinnest, so you can feel if they latch incorrectly. it really saved me. hopefully it will work for you?
