Help day 2 of blood sugar testing and I am so confused!

Need some help here ladies I am 32 weeks +4 days with twins - I am on day 2 of testing my blood sugars and my second reading 1 hr after breakfast has been Day 1 - 141 and Day 2 (today) 136. I need to be below 120. My fasting number both days was 71 and all my other reading yesterday throughout the day were between 74-86 never higher than 90. Yesterday's breakfast was 1/4 c cottage cheese and English muffin with a smear of cream cheese - no more than a 1 tbsp. And my number was 141 after an hour - I cried when I saw it because it was high and I did not expect that. So today I literally ate what was on the suggested meal plan - 2 slices whole wheat bread and 1 scrambled egg. What do you all eat for breakfast to help that morning number stay low? Or do you have any tricks or ideas on what may help me? Thanks I would really like to maintain this through diet rather than insulin but I know with twins I may not have that choice.

Re: Help day 2 of blood sugar testing and I am so confused!

  • Breakfast is the hardest meal for a lot of people. Personally I have to have way less carbs than my meal plan indicates. I have one piece of toasted sprouted wheat bread (Ezekiel bread) and two scrambled eggs and coffee. That usually puts me around 100, but some days I will randomly be like 127! I only have to be under 130 after an hour, though.

Don't get too discouraged, it takes a little while to figure things out. The first few days I had only eggs, then after I knew that was ok I added the piece of toast. It takes some trial and error.  The good news is your fasting numbers are awesome and those are the hardest to control!

  • I would also up your protein.  I always have two eggs at breakfast.

  • Thank you ladies! I do have eziekiel bread in the freezer and was going to experiment tomorrow with only one piece with an egg and either one slice Swiss cheese or two slices heated deli ham for more protein. I guess we will see what tomorrow brings!
  • Breakfast is the hardest meal for many, myself included. I'm 39weeks today, and have been limited to a 2egg omelet with ham and cheese each morning (with a glass of milk). The milk has been the only 'carb' i've been able to handle, still keeping my 1hour number below 140. Around week 35, i noticed my numbers were lower than before, eating the same things. I've begun adding carbs, and have been able to still keep my numbers down. My MFM said glucose intolerance typically peaks around 32 weeks, so don't lose hope! Keep at it, eventually you'll figure out what works for you!

  • Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if you should be below 120, you should be waiting two hours to test after meals.  Testing 1 hour should be 140 or under and you're meeting that or under (a tad over the first day).  It would be pretty rare to have such good fasting numbers (the hardest to control) but be consistently over on breakfast unless your diet was poor, which it doesn't sound like it is.

  • The cut offs depend on your doctor. Mine wants me under 130 at an hour. My sisters doc wants her under 120 at an hour.

That's good to hear that things often peak at 32 weeks. That gives me hope!

  • I was at an under 130 practice too.  OP, I agree with others. Sounds like you need more protein in the meal.

Everyone is different, but for me personally, I could eat a whole lot of carbs if I just ate enough meat and took a short walk after the meal.

Try a few different things, but if it doesn't work out, remember that it was likely nothing you did.
  • I added more protein like you all said and it worked. I did two eggs with tbsp cheddar and one slice eziekiel bread and I got a 106 reading!!! Yay!! So gonna stuck with more protein and less carbs again tomorrow to see if my reading stays low!
Thank you ladies for all your help!!
