Breast Pumps

    I am not sure either on your question yet I have not looked into them yet.

    You might want to check your insurance first and see if they have a certain brand that they have you get.

    Breast pumps are suppose to be covered now by insurance. You might already know this but wanted to make sure :)

    I EPed for a year with a Medela Pump in Style advanced. Best investment I made over 4 years ago with my son. I will probably always use a Medela pump.

    @jmknox

    You have to call your insurance company and ask them if they cover the pumps and if they do what ones.

    @jmknox

    I pulled up the very long "explanation of benefits" document from my online account and searched "breast pumps." I found what I was looking for in 2 minutes flat. Anything to avoid calling a 1-800 number.

    Either Ameda or Hygeia.  The Medela is not a closed system and also does not give you as much control over both cycle rate and suction as the others do.

    I verified with my insurance that they would cover one but they told me it would only be covered if I got it through a preferred provider & they gave me a list of 2 in my area: The Medicine Shoppe & a home medical supply store. When I inquired what brands/styles would be covered they said I had to ask the " preferred provider" which didn't really make sense but I chose the Medicine Shoppe & they are dealing with the insurance directly to find out which ones are covered.

    I BFed my DD and DS for over a year with both and used the Medela Pump In Style. I had no complaints at all! I have it away and now need to but another for #3. Reading this post though, it's making me question whether I'd get another Medela or a closed system pump. Can someone explain what a closed system pump is? Does it just have to do with having more control...or is there more to it?

    TIA!

    I EPed for DS for 10 weeks with a Medela and would recommend it to anyone. Something else to think about is if pump parts are readily available at any stores near you. Medela pump parts are carried in Target stores.

    I loved my ameda but I've heard great things about the hygeia. I'd go with one if those 2 because they are closed systems so the milk doesn't back into the tubing.

    My medela from my first is getting thrown in the garbage. I loved it but I opened up the plate and there is mold. I've done some research and if my insurance covers it I'm getting the hygeia.

    Ameda Purely Yours Delux Pump?

    or
    Medela Advanced Pump?
    or
    Hygeia Q Pump?

    Which one should I get?
    Check what brand your hospital uses. They can show you how to pump and clean a machine in the hospital, and they'll show you with what they have. As an added bonus, they can't reuse the attachments with other users, so you'll get a full complement of pump parts to take home. Also often colostrum bottles and sometimes a few 2 ounce, too. It's real nice to have the extra tubing, shields, valves, and membranes at home. My hospital even gave me a very simple manual pump. Having all these parts be compatible with what you have at home is good.

    Many (but not all) hospitals use Medelas. I was happy with mine. Medela sells a few different shield options. There are different shield sizes (the LC at your hospital can help you find your size) and there's a soft-touch one in the most common size.

    Whichever brand you get, don't forget to get nursing pads, lanolin, and extra membranes. I used Johnson and Johnson disposable nursing pads with our first and they were quite comfy. The Medela nursing pads were terrible. They felt, looked, and sounded (yes they were noisy) like paper. The washable/reusable Gerber nuk ones were good, too. If you're able to pump enough to build up a stash, the milk storage bags are good to have around, too.

    I inquired at my OB appt the other day about the very same closed system question. They said that if you read the directions, you are to let them pump run after you are finished pumping to dry out any condensation or moisture that may be present from any source. They assured me that since the hospital uses Medela, that if used properly I shouldn't have an issue. I guess we will see because 9 out of my 14 or so friends who have breastfeed pumped with this brand so I would have to say it had great reviews. The others we're stay at homes and used manual pumps. Guess I'll just research more and I'll decide
