Picking a second girl name sucks!

Ok, I know there is a board for baby names, but this is more of a vent, so bear with me.

DH and I are having the hardest time agreeing on a second girl's name. We only have 3 1/2 months to go and I feel like this kid is never going to have a name. We even tried the "march madness" bracket idea and his top two were different than my top two and neither of us wanted to budge.

We just have different style which makes it that much harder.
Everything I suggest is too "foreign sounding" or unique (Talia, Harper, Rory), and everything he likes is too girly/mainstream (Allison, Abigail, Haley) for my taste.

Re: Picking a second girl name sucks!

  • I agree. It's the hardest thing ever. Once you've used a girl name you both love it's near impossible to settle on another that you love as much and works with the one you already have. Ugh. :-S

  • What is DD1's name?  Maybe you should approach what would sound best as a sibset.

  • @danabsd - so glad someone else understands! I just don't want to feel like I'm settling on a name, rather than choosing one we both love.

  • I feel for you...naming DD1 was somewhat difficult due to taste differences but we ended up finding common ground. We were so relieved that this one is a boy, just because there were NO girls names that sounded good to either of us! Wishing you luck!
  • @ABColeslaw - DD1 is Raegan Claire.

I was really liking Harper Jane, but DH said last night that Harper sounded too much like a boy's name, so that crushed any progress I thought I was making.

He likes Abigail, and I don't hate it, but I just feel like it's such a different style than Raegan and how many other girls will have the NN Abby? a lot I presume.

I agree, Harper goes with Raegan a lot more than abby.  I also really like Raegan and Rory as a sibset.

  • This is our first and having the same troubles. I just don't feel in love with any of our options and our taste differences make it hard for us each to put our favs in for consideration since we both dislike each others top choices.
  • We are expecting twin girls...and coming up with a second name has been killer.  We have a running list these days, and I am to the point where I just want to meet the girls and then refer to the list for names based on what they look like.  I am not sure if this a solution or a form of procrastination.

  • My mom didn't choose my name until she had already pushed me out and went with the name the lady she shared delivery rooms with named her daughter. 3 months is still plenty of time. My husband liked Hayley too, but not for me. I like Harper!

    It's a BOY

  • I would veto Abigail with Reagan as well.  Harper fits nicely, and I never would consider it boy at all.  :-/

    I like--
    Reagan Claire and Harper Jane
    Reagan Claire and Mckenzie Jane
Reagan Claire and Sloane (not Jane)
    Reagan Claire and Finley Jane
    Reagan Claire and Avery Jane

Super helpful I am sure since all but one are not on your list. :P

  • We are having the same problem, but with a second boy name.  With our first the name instantly clicked for both of us.  Nothing is working right now for this one.

  • You are definitely not alone! We can't come up with a name for DD2 either! I have names I kind of like but nothing I love..

  • I'm naming my LO Reagan Elizabeth, and I know if I have another girl, it will be very hard to come up with another name that we both love.  I honestly just went through the names list on nameberry.com and said all the names I liked to my DH.  The first one he said he liked was Reagan, so we stopped at that one.  I love the name Harper and only know girls with that name.  Here are some of my favorite girl names, but can't use because of family/friends beat me to it!
Audrey, Caroline, Sophie, Catherine, Anna, Grace....Good Luck!

Now if only you could convince my husband to agree! He side-eyed Rory so hard.

Sounds like your DH likes more classic names than you. can you find something he might like that could use Rory as a nickname, like maybe Aurora, Roxane.... Can't think of anything else but there's got to be more.

ETA along those lines, we'll be using nn Talia for DD Natalie

  • We have cousins with a Reygan and Kathryn which they call her Ryn. The two names go well together and Kathryn is fairly traditional if that's the way your DH leans.

So jealous! I had Natalie ( nn Tali) on the list, but DH said he didn't like Tali, so my little heart got crushed again. I'm sure anything with a nn of Rory would also get the side-eye from him.

    Raegan and Sawyer

  • Would he go for Aurora nn Rory?

  • Would he go for Aurora nn Rory?

Most likely not. Plus, Aurora isn't my favorite pair with our LN. Which I guess means Rory would make for a bit of a tongue twister as well. boo :-(

@CamrynnsMommy - Nora/h was also a top contender for me, but DH shot it down twice.

I swear we are never going to pick a name.

  • I'm throwing out suggestions!
We are using Lillian but my top runner ups were Audrey and Haven.
  • This sounds exactly like me and my DH!

  • I love the Raegan and Harper combo :( I also like Raegan and Avery!

I have a friend who has 4 girls and they're Madison, Reagan, Peyton, and Carson. Good luck with the name decision!

  • We settled on Kennedy Jane... Classic yet unique. I don't know how good a combo Kennedy and Reagan would be though :p
  • Hailey? Has same "ail" as Abigail but more modern like Harper.

  • We are having issues too. DH is bringing up names that never were even in radar with DD #1. Ha
