Morning sickness making you eat like crap?

Omg, seriously all I want is chips, fries, limeade, and watermelon slushes from Sonic.  Salad makes me gag.  The smell of most veggies makes me gag.  I can tolerate most fruits but it seems like the more salt the more I *need* it.  The nurse at my intake told me to just get through this trimester, eat what I can keep down, and then once I feel better to focus harder on a healthier diet.  I can't help but feel guilty about how crappy I'm eating, and I feel like if I could eat healthier options I'd feel better.  It's hard to want to workout when all you ate for lunch was chips.

Anyone else eating like crap because of m/s??

  • Yep, I did with ds too. Just keep taking your vitamin! Try not to worry and just do your best when you feel better. On a non nausea day I attempt to eat better :)

  • I'm eating more crackers and toast (carbs) than I usually do, but not fried food or sweets. Have you tried eating every few hours? I'm finding that if I eat something healthy every few hours, like yogurt, applesauce or a banana, I don't feel as bad. If you really want salt, you might want to try swapping out all of the greasy stuff for less junky substitutes- saltines, pretzels, or for sweets, graham crackers?

  • I do this too. Except it's been very fattening carb foods. Since I have to eat every few to help keep the nausea at bay I try to split it up. For example, for breakfast I get a sausage sandwich and eat half for breakfast then the other half 2-3 hours later. Luckily I've stayed away from chips though. I snack on belvita crackers throughout the day.
  • Yessssss. OMG. I've just cleaned a bunch of nasty veggies out of the crisper -- I meant to be eating all healthy, but then the m/s hit and I literally can't even think about them. I'm also not cooking as much because thinking about raw meat makes me dry heave, so we're eating out a lot. It will pass though -- last time around my OB gave me the same advice about eating what you can at this point and gettin back on track with healthy eating when you can. I'm just trying to make sure I get enough cals to stave off the morning sickness and make sure I'm making milk for the little guy who is still nursing. Today I randomly decided I needed a big gross burger from Hardee's and afterwards it was the best I've felt in weeks. Go figure!
  • I feel ya!
I'm usually a nutrition freak.. I love veggies, salads, greek yogurt & smoothies but the last week & a half, I'm doing good to even eat toast! I've also been told to just get through the first trimester and continue with vitamins and try to eat as best as possible when not feeling nauseated.

You might want to try the bellybars? I just got some today in Smores flavor and it was actually pretty good! It made me feel a little better knowing that was packed with good baby food!
Also try the Preggie pop drops, I got some of those today and they've helped a bit.

    Good Luck!
  • Maybe try some sea salted almonds or peanuts or trail mix? For the salty craving part, at least. I feel like I want salty greasy fries all the time too, so I try to eat some of those things instead and indulge in the fries when I'm totally desperate :)

  • This is totally me too. I have been drinking an Ensure every day to get added nutrition. Bonus that it tastes like a delicious chocolate milkshake ;)

  • Even the smell of my kitchen is making me gag!! I used to love cheese and now I can't stand it. My diet has been consisting of saltines, toast and fruit. Right now, it seems like my body just doesn't want anything! I take my vitamin every morning. I just can't wait for this nauseousness to go away. I also am starting to feel really full after I have a few bites of food. Instead of having 2 pieces of toast for breakfast I can only eat one.

  • I guess one healthy thing I've been able to eat is fried egg on toast.  That's decent.  I do try to eat pretzels instead of chips and we don't usually keep chips in our house I just WANT them.  I indulge occasionally in the french fry craving, and I've been just squirting lemon juice into my ice water to satisfy my sour craving.  But man...a watermelon slush still sounds amazing.

I guess it's just so different than how I used to eat.  Pretty much ate salad for every lunch just swapping out protein, oatmeal for breakfast, greek yogurt etc.  I'm hanging in there.  Thanks for all of your suggestions!  I'm glad to know that I'm not alone.

  • Yes I have been eating poorly compared to my normal well rounded diet that I have lived on for the past 2 years. My poor DH just looks at me helplessly. All I want is McDonalds chicken nuggets, Welches purple grape juice, cheese, and crackers. I'm just happy I keep something down, anything down. It's better to eat what you can and try to take your vitamin to get SOME nourishment. Anything is better than ending up in a hospital with an IV in my arm.
  • YES! And I feel like my teeth are going to rot out from all the gingerale and jolly ranchers. I finally broke down and needed Zofran which is helping me so much. I actually ate semi normal today.

  • I almost posted something similar today. I am not eating junk, but just CARBS! It's all I can stomach. I have been so darn sick that just not throwing up is a blessing, but I can't help but wonder how my LO is doing with all those carbs and no "good for you" foods.

  • Carbs carbs carbs.  I eat crackers, pretzels, and cherios all day.  I'm finally hungry at 4-5pm and eat a decent dinner - usually pasta.  I have been eating soup at lunch...  But I don't even want to look at yogurt, most dairy actually, veggies, most meats...

  • I went from strictly Paleo to consuming ridiculous amounts of processed foods and wheat. I feel awful physically and mentally. I've already gained 5lbs and I just can't wait until 2nd tri in hopes this m/s will let up some so I can start eating right again.

  • OMG!!! I just called my OBs office because everything turns me off and makes me want to gag all day. I can't eat anything or drink anything. When I do or can, it's crap! I'm a little over 9 weeks and I hope this ends soon so I can eat some healthier things.
  • I'm so glad I saw this. I feel the same way, I've never been so unhealthy. At least I can eat yogurt but everything "healthy" makes me sick. Pizza no problem but veggies... yuck! I'll take all of you ladies' advice and just get through this first trimester.
  • I just started feeling this way on Monday and I'm feeling horribly guilty.  I normally have a salad every day for lunch, snack on carrots, almonds, etc.  Well screw that.  Monday morning I was eating leftover pizza at 9 am.  Today I HAD to have Jimmy Johns for lunch.  It was all I could think about.  I'm eating junk pretty much nonstop.  Yuck.

In a few weeks we will be SO healthy again, don't worry. ;)  Just get past the first tri!

  • So glad I came across this post. I haven't ate this bad in years. I feel awful, but the thought of veggies and yogurt make me gag. I have not had eggo waffles in YEARS... Tonight, I had some and they were amazing. I normally don't even really like syrup. But now I feel better knowing I'm not the only one in survival mode.

  • Advice: Take your prenatals at night after you eat dinner on a full tummy - not in the morning on an empty stomach. Made my morning sickness go from a lot in a previous pregnancy to minimal with this one now that I take them at night.

I have a ton of food aversions-- meats and greens sound gross. I am eating all fruit and cheese and crackers/chips. And I used to love chicken and now I want burgers .. Also, they say mint can be nauseating, but this time I crave mint chocolate chip ice cream of all flavors.. Weird.

Fun fact, if you look online, types of food that you crave can give you a hint about if you are expecting a boy or girl.
All my cravings point to BOY. We shall see.
  • Can I get an ALLELUIA!
Yesterday I ate 3... THREE packages of easy mac. We don't even buy that crap, but I was craving it & my hubby bought me some... and you know what? It was DELICIOUS.
I hear ya on the ginger ale & jolly ranchers... mint chocolate chip ice cream? CHECK! Just ate a big cake cone filled with it while watching The Following on Netflix last night. (Good binge-watching show, by the way... if your ass seems to be glued to the couch like mine).
I find I cannot take my Sea-Bands off (if you are unfamiliar -get some, they're acupressure bands for nausea worn on the wrists) or stop popping these things called "Preggie Pops" (flavored candy for nausea).
Back to eating like a freshman on campus..
crackers, chips (the saltier, the better), ramen noodles, basically anything 'carb-y'... spaghetti! Oh, that reminds me: has anyone else started hysterically bawling discovering they ran out of pasta sauce when attempting to make pasta for dinner? My husband came home to me sobbing in the kitchen one night & was scared something bad happened.... no. No-no! I just ran out of pasta sauce, normal reaction, right!? (Poor guy, hes in for a loop)
Well, all this typing has gotten me craving some of those goldfish in our cupboard.

I say: WHO CARES, gals! "Let them have cake" ...or however that goes, lets just be happy we can find foods to keep in our tummies. (Lest we forget about the Duchess across the river... remember Kate? She looked like she would just blow away...okay, still does) Be nice to ourselves, I say... we are growing babies, after all -and not everyone gets to participate in a miracle.

  • I'm sitting at work, 30 minutes to go, knowing that I'm eating dinner alone tonight and all I can think about is mac n cheese.  I'm wondering how close to my office I can get my hands on some. Is it possible to get mac n cheese in a drive through. Does the grocery store have it on the hot buffet? I must have MAC N CHEESE!

I cried the other night because I wanted potato chips and we had none.  DH just stood there looking confused.  He asked if I wanted him to get me some and I started sobbing even harder and said, "NO BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE RUDE OF ME TO MAKE YOU GO OUT AT 10PM FOR CHIPS!"  Yesterday after work he came waltzing in with a bag of chips.

    Good man, good man.

  • This morning I woke up in a nauseated daze and stumbled into the kitchen looking for a piece of toast and peanut butter to help get me past the m/s... while opening the peanut butter I noticed that it was completely empty and our roomate(temporarily thank goodness) had FINISHED THE DAMN PEANUT BUTTER WITHOUT REPLACING IT OR THROWING IT AWAY! Sobbing commenced immediately followed by a blinding rage... roomie was lucky I had a spare peanut butter to-go pack to hold me over, or all hell would've broken loose.
