Recommend your carrier

DD was a fussy newborn and did not like being worn in a carrier.  I can't remember the brand that I used as it was borrowed from a friend.

I'd like to try again with this LO but I'm not sure which type of carrier might be my best bet.  I'm hoping for something that could last past the newborn stage and be useful for at least the first year.  STMs, which carriers have you liked or disliked?

It is difficult for me to recommend just one carrier because I love all the carriers. :)

For dd as a newborn, I loved the Moby. It is very hot though, so this time around I am adding a Sakura bloom pure linen sling to the mix.

I also live SSCs (soft structured carriers) although I never had an insert, so dd didn't start using one until about 5 months. I have an ergo and a Tula. I love both but the Tula is cuter and fits my dd better.

I also love woven wraps for their versatility. BBslen pineapple was my first wrap. I also have a kokadi and a didymos and am trying like hell to get my hands on a pavo.

Facebook has a few swap pages that are great for tracking down different carriers. Watch out though as it is addicting!!

ETA: I also have a baby hawk mei tai that I love. I forgot about it because we don't use it much anymore but it was great when dd was a bit smaller!
  • I had a sling with DS and he hated it.  I also never felt like I really got the hang of how to use it.

For DD I used a Moby (borrowed from a friend) and she loved it.  I thought it was easy to wrap and I didn't find it to be all that hot.

This time around I plan to buy my own Moby or maybe look at the K'Tan breeze.  For when baby is older, I'd like a ring sling.

  • I'm a FTM, so I'm not speaking from experience, but I plan to use the Baby K'Tan Breeze to see how it goes.  Since she'll be a June baby in AZ, I don't think any of the soft side carriers will work for me in the summer, so we may upgrade as she gets older, but I've read a lot of good things about the K'Tan and that it's easier to use than a Moby.
  • i used both the moby and ergo. I liked the moby when she was small but I had a lot of trouble using it once she hit 13-14lbs or so. She just sagged in it and I never felt secure.

We use the ergo a ton and still do (DD is 14 months old..mostly use back carry now). However, I didn't care for the infant insert. It was hard to use when she was tiny. Both of these issues could be just me using the things wrong..I should add that disclaimer!

My mom also went on the maya ring sling website and made me one. I did get a good amount out of that and I think with rings and material it cost her $20 or so to make!

  • I really liked the ergo, as did H, and we will happily use it again this time.

  • We have tried them all, and the Ergo is by far, my favorite! DH even loves it because it fits well to his body and offers enough support for him to be able to carry baby for extended periods of time. I'm not too sure of the differences between the Ergo styles, but they are a great brand. You can't go wrong! :)

@Gigi8212 I wish I had the money for a Pavo!!! They're so pretty. Right now I'm trying to save for a WCMT obi to use for this baby!

I really love my tula and my woven wraps. Woven wraps are Pricier than a moby but will last way longer. I really liked a ring sling for when she was smaller, too. Definitely try to find something ergonomic. It will be more comfortable for you and baby!
  • Baby K'tan - love it! Used same one will all 3
  • I loved my Moby for early on and then my Beco.

  • I don't know if any of you have a store like this..but we have a great maternity store in my area. They rent carriers for something reasonable like $7 a week. I tried a couple different ones without having to unload $100 on each one. It helped me find what would work best for me and DH. I know its so easy to fall into the trap of buying so much stuff when you're a FTM!
