Ultrasound at 1st appt

Hey! Quick question for you-- did you have an ultrasound done at your first appointment?

My first appointment will be at the 9 week mark. I've known since week 4 that I'm pregnant, and I'm so anxious to see for myself that everything is moving along propery and there really is a baby in there. Did you have one done if you had your 1st appointment around that time? Don't want to get my hopes up if it's not a common thing they do.

  • I'm going to a birth center so I'm assuming they are well stocked with those machines... I hope so anyway!

  • My first appointment was this week, a day before 9 weeks, and it was just with the nurse. No ultrasound. My next appointment will be next Friday (10 weeks, 3 days) and he will do an ultrasound then for dating purposes (even though I was ovulation testing and know when I got pregnant - It's just his M.O.). I know that the other doctors don't all do that though. Call and ask!

  • My first appointment is today at 9w1d and they will do an us.
  • With DS I had U/S the first 3 appts.

  • My first appointment was today (7w3d), and was just lab work and meeting with a nurse. I don't get my first ultrasound until 2/12. I got my BFP on 1/14 so it seems like forever away, especially when I'm not even fully convinced I'm pregnant anymore (lack of symptoms) lol

Give them a call! I was thinking my first appt today was going to be exam/questions/ultrasound/blood/etc- but all we did was an ultrasound & talk for a few minutes. Each office is different!

I hope you do get one...you can't make anything out but oh my lord that heart beat is awesome. And seeing that little teddy graham move was awesome.

Jen9608 my symptoms have died down as well! I hate that.

  • I would call and find out. I had my first appointment yesterday and they scheduled me for an u/s tomorrow. With my old doctor they scheduled it separately as well. When I made my first appointment I asked what they would be doing since it was a new doctor and they told me a urine text, blood work and a pap.

  • i had my first appt today at 8weeks 6 days, they did an ultrasound, blood work, met with a medical assistant for history then with the doctor. Good luck!
  • OB and I went into my first appointment thinking I was almost 8 weeks - they did an US (turned out I was much earlier than that), but I am almost certain this office/hospital does one each time. It just depends. You could always call the office and ask what to expect during your first visit!

  • My first appt was at 6w and they did do an u/s.  I, however, am not the norm (ttc 6yrs and had a surrogate) so they are treating me very cautiously.

  • My first appointment will be just shy of 8 weeks and it will just be with a nurse, so not ultrasound.  I am hoping they schedule one for the next appointment!

  • It depends on the office. Mine does the U/S the first appt to make sure the pregnancy is viable. The second appt is with a midwife where they do bloodwork, family history, exam, and hopefully another ultrasound, but I'm not positive.

You can call the office and ask them what to expect your first appt.  That's what I did.  I know how hard the wait is, so I hope that you get an U/S first appt. **fingers crossed**

  • I just had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks 5 days! Depends on dr and insurance plan ;)
  • My first pregnancy - I had an US at my first appt - but I found I was pregnant at 11 weeks.
Second Pregnancy - I was high risk - so I had an US at 5 weeks pregnant - and every week / other week going forward.

Third Pregnancy - I had one at my first appt.....

  • My intake appt was early, so an u/s would have been a waste. She did a general check up, talked me through do' sand dont's, etc. Tomorrow is my first u/s at 7 weeks, 6 days. I hope your appt includes one!

Now I cannot wait until week 12 to start spilling the news! I am so excited and it's so hard to still keep a secret!!! When and how do you plan to tell your friends, etc?

Depends on the office, Mine does not have an ultrasound so my first appointment I got the referral for the ultrasound.
This is what my office does as well. Had my first appointment Monday and U/S yesterday afternoon at radiology.

  • I think it not only depends on the practice, but your medical history as well.  I am "advanced maternal age" (35 as of Jan. 28), and high risk due to blood pressure (controlled through medication), so they had me scheduled for my first appointment and us for Feb. 3.  Due to some cramping that was sharper than normal Monday, they went ahead and had me in on Tuesday for an ultrasound.  Best birthday present ever!  We got to see our baby bean and a little flickering heartbeat.  (Couldn't measure it yet, so they scheduled an appointment to Feb. 5 when I will be a couple of days over 7 weeks to get a BPM measurement.)

  • I ended up calling. The birth center that I'm going through is actually part of the hospital at UCSF, and they said they do ultrasounds at pretty much all appointments. Yay! Looks like my first exam will just entail a pelvic exam and ultrasound to see that every things progressing normally so far. Which is great, because some days I just don't even feel like there's anything in there and this is all a lie.

  • That's so awesome @JenL517 I'm happy for you! I'm keeping my fingers crossed as well!

We've already both sets of parents, our siblings, and two of our closest friends. We're holding off on telling another group of people until after we hear a heart beat and know things are looking good. We'll no longer be keeping it a secret at about 12 weeks or so.
