Cold and meds

I looked to see if this was posted before but am also on my phone so didn't get far. Sorry if it has been.

What can we take for a cold? My left nostril and that side of my throat hurt so bad. Like its on fire probably from draining. I'm all stuffy and miserable. I can't sleep due to that and feeling like I'm gonna get sick.

I actually had to take Tylenol to help my throat. I don't like taking anything but I can't feel like this on top of pregnancy symptoms.

I would check with your doctor, but if I remember correctly, you can take the sudafed behind the pharmacy counter.

  • You should talk to your OB as there is a risk/benefit balance to consider. Last pregnancy I had a really bad sinus infection and cough early third trimester and took Sudafed and cough syrup with codeine. This pregnancy I had a nasty head cold when I was only 5 weeks pregnant and I was told I could only have Tylenol and saline mist.
  • Tylenol is considered "safe." I believe sudafed is too.

I just caved and went to the dr bc I feel like death and like I swallowed a thousand razor blades. Turns out I have strep. Dr gave me amoxicillin. Told me it would be perfectly safe. I'm not happy about it, but the way I was feeling wasn't doing anyone...me or my little baby---any good.

  • i took nighttime tyenol (it has benedryl in it) both safe during pregnancy. it has done wonders with me sleeping at night with this cold that is lasting forever….starting to wonder if its pregnancy rhinitis.

  • I was also told no Sudafed at this time or anything with codeine. I have a ruptured ear drum that happened last week, as well as a sinus infection. I have antibiotics for the sinus infection, but was told really just to try to stick to Tylenol for pain. I guess codeine is ok later in pregnancy, but not really recommended during first trimester. I would call your OB and see what they recommend.

Hope you start feeling better.  I had a terrible cold a couple weeks ago.  Neti pot wasn't helping and my congestion had spread to my ears so I finally asked my OB if Flonase was okay since it is the only thing that helps with my allergies.  They said it was OK so I went ahead and used it for a couple days.  I know they consider it a Class C but I was comfortable using it since it is a localized steroid so very little if any actually gets into your bloodstream.  I think there may be another couple of nasal sprays that may be considered "safer" during pregnancy so maybe ask your OB about one of those.

Edited to add they told me following were safe to use:  Mucinex, Sudafed, Chlortrimeton for congestion, Tylenol for pain or fever, Plain Robitussin for cough, salt water gargle for sore throat and/or lozenges

  • I find a neti pot really helps with congestion.  There's one you should be able to get at any drug store that looks like a bottle and you squeeze it into your nose.  It works way better than the ones that look like a tea pot.  And it hurts less than the pressurized saline sprays. I also drink hot water, honey and lemon.  Use a humidifier.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • My dr told me to take Zyrtec and I could take Sudafed when absolutely necessary.
