Which old wives tales do you believe?

So we all know that there's a million wives tales out there claiming to predict which sex the baby is. And most of us think most of them are crap. But I would dare say that some people do believe a subset of these old wives tales. So I'm curious, which ones do you believe, if any?

Re: Which old wives tales do you believe?

  • I believe the wives tales that girls make you sicker than boys and that your skin is worse with girls than boys (ie acne). This is based on my own experiences and what friends have said. I also think I've read somewhere (maybe a scientific study even) that there's a biological basis for this due to higher circulating hormone levels with girls.

  • I don't know that I believe them, but here are what's held true me so far:

Catherine is glued to my side and I'm having a boy (apparently, were it a girl, she'd want nothing to do with me)

My skin is much better with this boy than it ever was with Catherine.

My mother's needle trick told me this was a boy, she's never been wrong :)

    Married DH 7/30/11

    CSC arrived 5/7/12

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • The needle trick also told me I was having a boy...but I have had acne problems on my chest that are really gross that I never had before...so I don't know if I'm buying the skin is better with boys OWT!

  • I don't want to believe any of them, but against my better judgement I sort of believe in the key test. I did it ~5 weeks and the way I picked up the key indicates twins apparently.

  • I tend to believe the ring on a string test because its proven correct WAY more than 50% in my experience. (Say, 90% or so.)

I have no idea WHY it would work, but it does seem to.

  • I'm not into any of them but the one I hear all the time is the belly is high with a girl and low with a boy. And seeing that I'm carrying low everyone says "oh you're having a boy" ( major eye roll). Can't wait to find out and hopefully prove them wrong!
  • For funsies, here's my .02 on how my pregnancies have differed:

When I was pg with DS, I had acne and terrible hair.  I craved citrus and meat.  I always measured big and ahead.

With DD, carried low; had great skin and hair.  I craved sweets.  I measured average/on track.

This time, I'm carrying high with great skin and hair. I am craving sweets.  I have been measuring about average/on track.

Was never really sick with any, but 1st tri was progressively harder each pregnancy.

DD has recently become OBSESSED with my belly, kissing and hugging the baby- but says it's a girl.  DS says boy, he wants a brother.  He predicted DD was a girl when everyone else said boy.

Chinese gender predictor was correct with both DS and DD.  This time it says I am having a girl.

Who knows.  I don't believe in any of them as they are all clearly giving mixed signals.

  • I'm a FTM and so far I don't believe any of the OWT. I have my a/s next Tuesday so I'll find out then which OWTs were right or wrong.

  • The ring test has been right for all 3 babies, the HR has been right all 3 times (even though medicine shows no correlation), my skin didn't break out this time (I'm having a boy, so that's right), I crave salty/sour foods more than sweet this time, which is also right.

All of the classic OWT have always been true for me each pregnancy.

  • For nearly everyone i've known, carrying high = girl and carrying low = boy. Not to say there aren't exceptions, that's obvious, but in RL i've noticed it be more accurate than not :)

  • I like to think I believe some only because I have a very strong feeling that I'm having a girl.  We're TG, so we really don't know for sure it's just my hunch.  Either way, everyone else keeps saying girl based on my sweet cravings, nausea during 1st tri, my high belly and my insanely high libido (apparently higher libido = girl for a lot of women, that was a new one I had never heard).

  • Unfortunately, I believe the stupid string test. DH and his family live by it, and I was so hoping that this baby would be a girl, just to prove that test wrong (totally happy with a boy, btw). It correctly predicted the gender and number of children his grandmother, mother and sister had, in the correct order of birth. The string also says we are having four children...there are scientific ways to shut that string up.

  • I don't believe them, but still did all of them. Chinese gender chart said girl, string test said girl, craved sweet things and citrus. I had no morning sickness and no acne. Since finding out that its a girl (which I am SO excited for and kinda hoping she was) I have become convinced she is a he. I dont know why, and I know it is not rational, but every time I hear something like girls make you sicker, I get worried that its a boy.
  • I'm another one who doesn't believe any of them.  I've known plenty of exceptions to all of them.  It is all just chance and people will believe what they want to.  It is still fun to play along sometimes though :)

  • I don't even know if this is one..but my dad told me that girl HB tend to be higher. last time and this time both have never been below 150 (girls both times)
  • I didn't pay attention to any of them. DH on the other hand was eating all them up. Looking up different tales. It was funny listening to him. One day he just knew we were having a boy cause of food I wanted. The next day he just knew we were having a girl. It was sweet. I just let him have his fun.

I am having a girl, and I had no morning sickness at all. But face has been consistantly broken out though.. But I had breakouts before I got pregnant as well.

I have craved- bagels and cream cheese, cheese quesadillas, and salads..

  • I believe none of them. Both of my pregnancies have been polar opposites, and guess what? Both are boys! It's all a load of crap.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • Pfffft...doo -hickey. I was sick non-stop when I was pregnant with my boy. Threw up every day until delivery. I'm pregnant with a girl this time. I haven't thrown up yet. Also, baby girl is giving me the GLOW of my life. I can go makeup free!
  • I have had very similar pregnancies to my mother and aunt (who had 1 girl and 3 boys between them): No morning sickness and fatigue all 9 months (5, so far for me!) I kind of had a feeling I wouldn't have morning sickness, and I think it was because they didn't.

(This could mean absolutely nothing, but that's what I tell myself!)
  • None.

With my first DD I had great hair, skin no morning sickness at all. With DS I had great full hair, great skin and was so sick for the first fourteen to sixteen weeks. With this one ,girl, my hair is dry but oily if that even makes sense, horrible acne like never before and I still vomit from time to time. All three pregnancies were very different.

  • None- both pregnancy have been opposite and none matched any of the wives tales.
  • The baking soda test and Chinesse calendar told me it was a boy and they were right...
  • I don't believe any of them. DH believes that we are having a boy because of a silly pattern. His great grandpa, grandpa, and father each had three children and it was girl, boy, boy. My mother had three kids and we were girl, boy, boy. We had a girl, then a boy, and now a ___________. (I'm still hoping it's a minion though.)

  • I don;t believe in any of them. But goddammit it bums me out that like five of them are proving my MIL "right'.

She was "right" that all my heartburn meant DD would be born with a lot of hair too. First kid in like three generations to be born with hair. W.T. F.

We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Ok I have a funny story. I live I Singapore. I was at work and had a really bad day of heartburn. I joked with my coworker (who is of Malaysian decent) that my baby will be born with lots of hair. She thought it was such a strange old wives tale. She then said that they did have something similar. Which was if you grow a lot of pubic hair, your baby will have lots of hair on its head when it's born. Just loved learning of an old wives tale from another culture!
  • From my experience, being pregnant with two girls, I say that the old wives tale which states that girls steal your beauty is SO TRUE. My skin is awful, I've gained a ton of weight, I am still getting morning sickness even at 21 weeks and am feeling disgusting. Where is my glow? :(
  • I don't believe any OWT are genuine, but for fun my H and I went through a long list of them a few times before finding out and the majority pointed to girl, which is what we're having. The odds were ever in our favor!
