1st Trimester

Need help with telling the parents.

Hi all! Newbie here. Currently 12DPO, got my BFP on 11DPO on a Wondfo and FRER. :) Confirmed last night with another FRER and a CBE digi. And two more Wondfos this morning. I just like POAS. :) DH and I are having trouble figuring out how to tell his parents. We're nowhere near a holiday or birthday, so a gift would seem a bit odd. I want to catch them by COMPLETE surprise. I know we're going to tell my mom and stepdad on Valentine's Day, because we will be at her house and so will both of my brothers - one is coming to visit from Florida. So I am going to give her a Valentine card with the news inside. My dad lives 8 hours away, so he will probably get a phone call/Skype session. His parents live a few blocks away and we see them often. Can anyone help with some ideas on how we can break the news and surprise the crap out of them? Thanks so much! H&H pregnancies to all. :)

    "Hey we're pregnant! Surprise"

    Mission accomplished.

    That's no fun at all!

  • I don't need anything elaborate either - such as a gift, which I did mention. Thanks, though.

  • Check out Youtube, there are loads of cute announcement videos that you can get ideas from.

You should build a giant papier-mâché replica of yourself, but make it what you will look like at about 40 weeks pregnant, and place it on a wooden platform with wheels. Have your husband hide on the inside dressed like a baby, and then wheel that sucker to your in-laws' front doorstep. Ring the doorbell, and when they answer, your husband should burst through the belly Twilight style. A normal exclamation he could yell while all of this occurs is, "Surprise!," but play around with it. My personal favorite would be, "Boo-Yah!"

Ok, but seriously, there are a lot of cute ideas online if you google around for it. I'm so bad at being cute, I probably shouldn't have responded. Anyway, congratulations!
    Oh God. I'm dead.

On a more serious note, one cute idea I've seen is to have them over for dinner. Serve baby back ribs, baby carrots, and other little cutesy "baby"-themed foods. See if anyone catches the theme.

  • I'm no help. I'm super close with my parents so right after my husband left for work the morning of the BFP, after we'd had our own private celebration, I called them up and told them. Trust, they were still super surprised and absolutely giddy. They had no idea it was coming. :)

Jumping out of uteri twilight-style is *always* the correct answer!

These posts just make me exhausted. What's wrong with a good old fashioned 'We're expecting!' to tell parents?

Have you thought about sending an edible arrangement? They have baby themed ones that you can do and then you can add a personalized card to it with your announcement.

  • If you live close to his parents, could you arrange to meet them at a place in town- an intersection or park. Stand there with some pink and blue balloons maybe?? That would probably be a decent surprise!
  • Thanks to all that gave me ideas! I've googled and youtubed my ass off. Also pinterest. Thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas. And please, forgive my exhausting post asking for help.

If it weren't below zero out right now this would be great! :)

  • We put a "I'm going to be a big brother" shirt on our dog and waited for my parents to figure it out. My mom thought we were getting another dog!  For his parents, we got them on Skype and then told them we were sorry we hadn't sent their Christmas present, it would take 9 months to make and they'd get it in September. Again, mom didn't get it.

this is similar to how I told DH. I bought a onesie for our fat cat (hilarious, by the way) and wrote "I'm going to be a big brother" on it. DH loved it and was so excited. :)

  • We called them and told them we were pregnant. Pretty sure they were still elated/surprised.
I'm being featured in a new pregnancy/motherhood blog during the month of October, so if you ever wanted to know more about my pregnancy, birth, and motherhood experiences than anyone ever should, check out my posts in the link below! :)

  • @Kimbus22 - haha! "I need a drink!" too funny. I'm sure they'd be just as happy if we told them that way, too. We just want to think of something a little special because we don't have a holiday or birthday near where we can slip in a gift of some sort. We may TRY to hold off until his mom's birthday in March. If we don't get too antsy. Thanks!

  • We wrapped the US picture up in a box and gave it as a gift. They were very surprised!
  • We really didn't do anything creative.  For my in-laws, my husband just told them that I was pregnant on the phone and they were plenty suprised and excited.  Same for my mom, I asked her if she had any vacation plans for the end of August.  I then suggested that she come visit us, she asked why and I told her it's because we are having a baby. She was so excited, I think she screamed and cried at the same time.  I think their reactions will be priceless no matter what you do.  It was pretty awesome to see how excited everyone was.

This is what I'm most looking forward to.

    Best. Idea. Ever.

Seriously, this doesn't have to be a production.  I personally have never gotten further than, "So, we have news..." before my mother starts screaming "You're pregnant!  Oh my god!  You're pregnant!  I need a drink!  We're having a baby!  We're having a baby!  I need a drink."  I guarantee you there is literally no person on this planet more excited about grandchildren than my mother.
My MIL is right up there with your mom. She started screaming and crying with joy (she cries at everything) and we were facetiming, so by the end of it, she was crying so hard and holding the phone so close to her face that it looked like that scene of the girl filming herself in the Blair Witch Project.
Haha, Blair Witch. Snot from her nose and all? :)
