Making changes

We just made the switch to a convertible car seat. J was getting way too heavy, my wrist was starting to hurt and well he's long.
My problem last night was: day care wraps him up. It's the unwrapping putting him in the car seat, and then wrapping him again to get him out and into the home.
Jeesh it has to be another way. He does have a think snow suit but I'm a worry nut and get fearful that he's gonna freeze, yes it's highly unlikely but still.
What's your routine?

Are the daycare providers wrapping him up when they drive him around (do they do that?) or just in preparation for you to pick him up?

If its the latter, can you just tell them not to worry about it, you'll take care of everything when you pick up?

No daycare only wrap him up when i pick him up so his face doesn't get cold.

  • We had car seat ponchos made for DS1 that we use with DS2. Basically it is a blanket with a hood and a zipper own the front. We made ours long enough that they cover baby feet. When you get to the car you flip the back of the poncho up over the top of the seat. Set baby down with nothing between baby and seat. Then unzip the front enough to do up straps. Zip back up and baby is covered from chin to toes in fleece with a fleece hood as well. All with no bulk to interfere with straps.

DS1 moved into using a regular fleece jacket this winter at 3.5. Before that he used the ponchos.
  • We have a fleece snow suit we use. It's from Columbia. Super thin. I think it's this one

  • Ditto everyone else.  They really don't get all that cold in that short a time unless you're talking prolonged exposure to arctic temperatures.  We do a thin fleece, hat and mittens with a blanket over him right now in the carrier.  When we switch to the convertible I'll just hold him with the blanket around him or possible get him a car seat poncho.

Who made them? Can you post a picture?

We do the Old Navy fleece footed bunting and a blanket over that. It's safe to do (per two different licensed car seat installers at the sheriff's dept) as long as you tighten the car seat straps. Sometimes if it's "warmer" out (we're in NY so warm is subjective) we'll do fleece pants and fleece hoodie with a long sleeve onesie underneath and the blanket over it.

Single layer fleece is generally fine as long as it's well fitting.  I'm a little confused though about what they told you about tightening the straps because that's only half of the actual statement.  They're safe to use as long as you're able to tighten the straps as tight as you would without the clothing item.  That phrase is slightly misleading but overall, accurate.  You'll always have to make minor adjustments from outfit to outfit because a tshirt and a thermal are different, leggings and jeans are different, etc.  The adjustments need to be very minimal though.  If you take the baby out of the seat after sizing it with the bunting and then put them back in without it you can see how much dangers extra room you may allowing in the harness.  Some are fine and many aren't.
