Thinking of a babymoon to Mackinac Island?

I had a great idea today. DH has never been to Mackinac Island and I haven't been since I was probably 14 years old. It's close enough that we wouldn't need to fly (6 3/4 hour drive to St. Ignes. ) and Mission Point resort has some really good package deals, we can't really afford anything tropical at the moment. It seems like a lot of hotels are already booked for the beginning of the season, but with this polar vortex going on, who knows when the weather is going to be nice enough to go. When do you think would be the latest I could get away with going? (My due date is July 11th)

Also, I'm thinking of doing Mission Point's Ghosts of Mackinac package, where we get a guided tour of haunted places (or is that too spooky for a babymoon?)

*nodding and smiling like I have any clue as to where the fuck those places are*
Mackinac island is in between Michigan's upper and lower peninsula! It is only accessible by boat or small plane and no vehicles are allowed on the island,so you have to ride a horse or bicycle. They're also famous for fantastic fudge.

  • I'd do anything for some Mackinac Island fudge ice cream right about now
  • I LOVE Mackinac Island! I think that you would be fine to go as late as early May. My OB office said no travel 8 weeks out. Once in 3rd tri...and probably late 2nd...you just need to make sure you stop often on car trips to get out and walk around a bit.

  • I'm thinking of heading to MI as well. We travel a lot and in the summer I hate to leave Northern Michigan. I am due at the end of July and we were thinking of heading up Mothers Day weekend - our anniversary. MI is a 2 hr drive or a 40 minute flight for us. I imagine you're coming from the south, I don't know how late you're interested in spending that much time in the car, that's something to consider and something to consider asking your healthcare provider.

This is something I CAN tell you, we got married in early May, I was shooting for cherry blossoms in Leelanau county, according to the farmers almanac, the cherries blossom 70% of the time Mother's Day week. In 2012, the year we got married the blossoms came 3 weeks early, put wedding day was 60-65 and sunny. Perfect. On our first anniversary, there were cherry blossoms and... SNOW! We went to the UP and hiked anyway. I guess what I am saying is the earlier you hit up Northerm Michigan the bigger the gamble you take - but a warm Northern Michigan day in May - before tourist season - that's a real win.

MI is lovely, I'm sure your SO will love it. I live in Leelanau Co, where Sleeping Bear Dunes is and by Traverse City. This really is a great place to visit to wine taste and what not but there are great resturaunts, beautiful scenery and a few nice spas. If you're from Chi (just trying to guess 6.5 hr away) it could be a worthwhile consideration, just a but closer than MI.

But our fudge does NOT compair.
  • June IS the lilac fest...
  • Just a little warning...if we have a colder spring Mackinac Island will still be kind of chilly in May, which may be nice because it won't be as crowded.  I lived in the UP for a few years and it snowed at least once each May, but if you go, have a great time!  And if you take a ferry make sure to wear a coat or you'll freeze your ass off on the water.

  • Yes Mackinac Island is flaunted chilly (40s-50s) in May. Another thing to keep in mind is it's all day walking! I'm not sure if you will want to be waddling around up and down the hills that far along. Then again, you can stock up on so much fudge!

  • We actually went there on our babymoon in May of 2012. It was a bit chilly but not crowded at all, which was nice. You would probably want to head up early May just to give yourself enough time. However, all the walking and hills might get to up. I remember being out of breath a lot. Thinking about renting bikes or bringing yours along if you have them.
  • Yay! I go there every summer :) I would probably go in late may or early June at the latest, remember, if something happens on the island it can be complicated getting off. I heard Mission Point has been doing or planning a major renovation, so it's going to be really nice. We generally stay at the Lilac Tree hotel and enjoy it, and last year we stayed at the Bicycle Inn and Suites, it's brand new and really nice.

Also, I am a fan of haunted tours (done my fair share) but just a warning, in my experience the Mackinac island ghost tours are suuuuper cheesy. I don't know if they all are like that though.

I got married there. It's one of my favorite places ever. The smells may be too much for me while pregnant. I agree with the walking, it could be tiring and I don't think you'd biking. But either way I'm sure you could make it a lovely baby moon. Now I want to go!! I want some fudge and a trip to the butterfly house :)
  • It being chilly might not be such a bad thing in 3rd tri ;)

  • This is crazy because I was just looking up packages yesterday for a babymoon there! I really want to stay at the Grand Hotel because it's supposed to be haunted and my DH just eats that stuff up, but it's so expensive. If you find anything really good, please let us know. I want to go in June, but I'm due July 29, so I might be getting uncomfortable by then.

I was looking at Mission Point, they have a "ghosts of Mackinac" package, and they are much more reasonably priced than the Grand Hotel.

  • I love Mackinac Island. I'd probably try to go early June since you'll be 6 1/2 hour drive plus a ferry ride from home. I'm sure it'll be super busy then though, but I'm not sure I'd risk going much later. Are you around Detroit? I grew up in Toledo, OH
    I'm in Southeastern Wi. :]
