What type of yogurt are you using?

Good Morning :) We are planning to start LO on yogurt sometime soon and I'm wondering what type of yogurt to use. We did yobaby or some other baby yogurt with DD1, but I'm wondering if it's really necessary do to the price difference in that and regular yogurt. I asked the pedi and he basically just said it needed to be whole milk and that sometimes the adult yogurts with fruit (like peach or whatever) had more sugar than I'd want to be giving her. I asked him if there was a certain amount of sugar I wanted to stay under and he said not really, just to look for lower sugar options (but not fake sugar).

So, what type of yogurt are you ladies feeding LO? Right now at home, I have the regular yoplait with peaches, blueberries, and strawberries. I'd steer clear of  strawberries for now, because we haven't done them yet, and I don't plan to for a few months, but I'm wondering if the blueberry one or the peach one would be ok.

Also, what are other good puree options to add a 3rd meal? Right now, we are doing rice cereal and fruit or veggie puree twice a day and doc wants her on a 3rd meal by 9 months. She's not interested in chunkier solids right now.

TIA!

  • I use Yobaby or YoToddler because it is whole milk yogurt and organic.  I guess that is just my preference, but you are right it is expensive.  She loves it though:)
  • Loading the player...
  • We use yo baby. It is expensive but is just easier for me to grab that than have to look at the labels for lower sugar.
  • I just got done giving N some yogurt for the first time...yobaby here too.
    Brady (7.15.10) and Nolan (5.11.13)
  • Yep... YoBaby over here, too. Adult yogurt has tons of sugar.

  • I use stonyfield plain whole milk yogurt. It comes in a big container so it's cheaper than the little ones like Yo Baby. I've also given plain Greek yogurt (Cabot) and it has 10% fat.

  • I have a silly question. Are u guys able to find this in the baby food aisle or do you find it with the rest of the yougurt. I ask because I haven't been able to find organic for ds and I would like to introduce it.

  • Yobaby is with the yogurt. It comes in a 6 pack

  • We use yobaby when the stonyfield is out at the grocery store. He loves stonyfield vanilla.
  • We tried yo baby, maybe too early. Seemed to give him a belly ache. I'm going to reintroduce small amounts with fruit purees and see if that helps.

  • We do Yobaby here as well. We started with the plain but now she has tried the blueberry and the banana flavor.

Good to know! Our pedi did specify between 8-9 months, so maybe we will wait until closer to 9 months to start.

  • Yobaby or Gerber. Mostly Gerber. Bj's sells both. Yobaby is in the fridge with other yogurts and Gerber is in the baby food aisle.

This is why we stick with yobaby for N too. Also, my 3 year old eats yoplait kids because it doesn't have any artificial colors and the sugar content is also much lower than regular yogurts without adding artificial sweeteners.

Same here and I will mash up banana, blueberries, add applesauce, or a fruit purée to it.

  • My ped said to start at 6 months, so she has been eating YoBaby since then, and she loves it. She prefers the blueberry, but she will eat the peach, too. She has yogurt with either breakfast or lunch every day.

Yes I add purees fruit as well because the plain yogurt is tangy.

  • Whole milk stoneyfield plain. The baby yogurt has added sugar. I add fruit puree to the plain and she loves it.

I get three kinds because I can never make my mind up.

    1) plain Greek yogurt and add fruit purée

    2) Ella's kitchen yogurts (sugar free)

    3) last resort petit filous.

Edit: because Greek yogurt is more creamy than tangy she will eat this on it's own. I just put the fruit in to get some more fruit into her.

So far we've done plain goat's milk yogurt and plain sheep's milk yogurt. The goat's milk yogurt has a much stronger flavor, but he loves it.

I'll try cow's milk yogurt next, just so he gets exposed to it. As a former vegan, now strict vegetarian, I'm taking baby steps back into dairy myself.

    Eta- neither have sugar added.
  • dammit i haven't even thought about yogurt...i have a question though. so our pedi said no milk until a year...but yogurt made with whole milk is okay? i was thinking no milik meant no milk and that included yogurt and cheese?

I was totally confused about that too- but doc said that milk products are different than straight up milk, just like babies aren't supposed to have whole eggs (yolks only) until a year, but baked goods (like bread) are ok with the whole egg. There are too many rules.

Not sure about the allergy side of it, but on the nutritional side I think doctors mean no cow's milk before 1 year is for the baby to drink only BM or formula for the nutrients. But cow's milk products are ok bc they aren't the main source of food.

And yes, there are too many conflicting rules!
