**Updated!** Growth spurt?? (formula fed baby)

My son is six weeks today. For the last 24 hours, he wakes up, eats an ounce or two, falls back asleep, then wakes up again an hour to two hours later and does the same thing again. Normally he goes three hours between feedings and eats 3-4 oz. He has also had really bad, stinky gas the last 24 hrs, so not sure if that's effecting his eating habits. We are also dealing with a possible milk sensitivity and have had to switch formulas a few times in the last five days. Anyone have any insights? Could this be the infamous 6 week growth spurt, or unrelated? I'm freaking exhausted!

Eta: Just to update... LO has been on Nutramigen for 24 hrs and he's a completely different baby! He's literally only actually cried once in the last 24 hours and it was because I was out with him and stretched his feedings too far apart. Otherwise, he's been cooing and smiling. Even when he was crying earlier from being hungry, he paused to smile and coo at me... And then back to crying while I shook his bottle up. Love love love that he is feeling so great!

Re: **Updated!** Growth spurt?? (formula fed baby)

  • Mine turned 6 weeks yesterday, and I could have written this post exactly. Mine has the gas, the formula change, more sleepy--but only in the daytime--he is getting my hopes up with sleeping better through the night. Strange, I attributed some stuff to the 6 week growth spurt, but I didn't think about the gas being part of it. anyway, we switched from similac sensitive to the spit up formula. However, I'm not sure we'll stay with it. He still spits up, and also has that awful gas.

  • @tyedyeme12, I'm not sure the gas is related, but it is an issue we're dealing with, and it's painful for LO. Our pedi thinks he has a milk sensitivity, so he's on a special formula for that. We've tried four different formulas in five days, ugh! FX we both get through this!

  • We haven't hit the growth spurt yet but my LO was super fussy and would cry inconsolably when trying to poop or pass gas. He'd wake up screaming.  We tried several formulas, massage, bicycle legs, gripe water, gas drops... nothing helped.  I asked my pedi about a milk allergy because of the bad rash on his face that was spreading, along with green diarrhea and his other issues, and she told me it was baby acne and colic. I decided to try Nutramigen anyway, and it's like I have a new baby. He's sleeping and eating better. If your lo has a milk sensitivity, give nutramigen a try. I believe similac makes something comparable as well.

This is exactly what they prescribed today, and LO is actually eating it! He's also pooped three times tonight after days of nothing. DO NOT try the similac version! It's horrible! LO spat it out and completely refused it! He also has green diarrhea (when he poops) and horrible gas. They tested him for a milk allergy. It came up negative, but they're still treating him for a milk allergy. Hope we get some results. As of today I'm no longer giving him any breastmilk. I've been pumping and giving what I can up until now. We decided to try taking the breastmilk away and just give him the new formula for 24 hours to see how he does. We're only 6 hours in and he already seems like he's feeling better. Think this is the end of our breastmilk journey. It's been a rough breastfeeding road for us, and this is now the icing on the cake. LO is a FF baby, and I feel ok about it. I won't let him suffer if I don't have to.

I hope it makes a big difference for you guys! We've been using it for 4 days and I get thrilled when he farts in my lap while just chillin'. He poops several times a day too,  and loves to do so while he's eating.  It's awesome! Lol.

It's okay tohave a FF babe if that's what needs to happen. Sometimes I beat myself up about our breastfeeding experience too.  We had a nicu stay that made bf super difficult and then my supply never really came in.  I gave up pumping after only getting an ounce max every time.  I'm just thankful lo is growing, gaining and I'm doing everything I can to make sure he's happy. You're doing great!

  • Sounds like growth spurt to me. Just wait it out before switching formulas. It will be over soon. Then comes the 12 week growth spurt. My LO is in the midst of the 12 week spurt, Which has been the worst growth spurt so far! But it's almost over! He will be back to normal soon, hang in there mama!

I just want to say thanks ladies. I could have written this post and I'm at my wits end. While I'm sitting here reading, Haden is sleeping on my shoulder and literally just woke up shrieking because he needed to burp again...an hour after eating only 2 ounces. He's been eating Similac Sensitive but it doesn't seem to be doing everything he needs. Off to text FI to bring home Nutramigen...
