Tax break for BF

https://www.parentsociety.com/parenting/attention-new-moms-there-is-an-irs-tax-break-for-breastfeeding/

So what do we think ladies? Personally I'm trying to think of how I could possibly exceed 7% of our income with the costs of breastfeeding. Insurance covered my pump and I'm a SAHM so I've only purchased two bottles. Anyone think they will actually be able to claim this tax break?

Re: Tax break for BF

  • I haven't read all of this... but breast pads, nipple cream, Advil?? Nursing bras? Nursing tanks? Would any of this work?

The article makes it sound like you could count all of that. But like chillpr said you would need to have receipts in case of an audit. Seems like a good idea if you are organized and have spent 7% of your income on BF supplies.

  • I believe you can add it to all your medical expenses throughout the year. When DD was sick, we included those bills, plus pharmacy and mileage to and from appointments. Check with your tax specialist. We now keep all receipts every year, just in care we hit that 7% again.

  • The 7% has to be medical expenses not just bf supplies...and then you can write off the bf stuff as well. 7% is still a lot on medical bills!

This. I think it's all the medical expenses total, which can now include bfing supplies. We itemize our deductions, and our accountant always asks what we've paid in copays, out of pocket, and even our premiums. I assume that's all part of the 7%. Maybe...there's a reason we don't file our own taxes lol. Eta: It would be nice if I could deduct all the online shopping I've done to pass the time while sitting here bfing.

  • Ooh, premiums? Our accountant has said no to including those, but I think that's because it's are paid with pre-tax dollars. Will have to look into this more...
