So I know there has been a lot of talk about living in/moving to CA lately so I thought I'd ask you ladies. DH and I have talked for years about moving to CA but last night he came home and wanted to talk about him applying for a job in Palo Alto.
I am all for moving out there but then got scared once we started looking at what the cost of houses are in the Palo Alto area. We live in CT so we are used to high cost of living but my god a descent house out there seems to be 600k or higher. Does anyone live in this area and can tell me if there are safe surrounding suburban areas where you can get a home (2000 sq ft, 3-4 bedroom) for around $350k range? I don't know much about the area and don't know where to start looking.
Also, is it realistic is survive in this area of CA on a household income of $100k? TIA

There is a big sunshine tax here. It was worth it though my husband is in high tech. And I have family in ca.
Also palo alto is one of the most expensive cities in the USA.
I thought it was expensive to live here in CT but wow CA blows us away. @KKDragonfly is right, that's an expensive sunshine tax lol.

I've always lived by the coast though (except for two godawful years in the desert of Palm Springs. Never again) and everything is much more expensive closer to the beach. The further inland you go, the cheaper it gets for the most part. Hotter too though.
You could make it on $100k but your house will likely not be as nice as the one you have in ct and you won't have as much spending money as before.
Despite all the negative stuff I just said about California, I miss it there! And, dear God, I miss in-n-out. So effing much.
@FromCTtoCA I live right outside Waterbury (smaller town). As much as I love living in the woods I have had enough of the cold weather here.

Email me if you want to chat. Come be my real life buddy and neighbor! That would be so exciting!
ETA: San Jose is nice too. I grew up in West San Jose and the downtown area is getting nicer. Good restaurants and museums.
ETA: DH works at Stanford! Are you on the Sanford Parent List Serve?
Thanks everyone! I talked with DH last night and we are going to continue looking into all our options for moving out there.
I just read an interesting article about East Palo Alto that there are so many foreclosures that large developers are coming in and scooping up houses for around $450k. They said this is also happening in neighboring cities as well because the area is booming. Just thought I'd share, thought it was interesting.
