Dumb question

This is such an "I'm a ball of anxiety" first trimester question but all the info I'm seeing online is conflicting. How much caffeine are you drinking a day? What amount would you get a bit uncomfortable with drinking?

Re: Dumb question

  • The internet seems to say 200 mg/day.  I feel comfortable drinking one cup per day (I do tea because coffee isn't palatable to me anymore), with a second cup (tea or soda) on a rare occasion.

  • I try to limit myself to no more than 240mg.  1 pop or 2 cups of coffee

  • The only caffeine I drink is Dr pepper. I used to drink coffee but have had major aversions since getting pregnant. The most I would drink in one day is one can of DrP. But I try to go a few days in between.

This. Plus decaf coffee or tea.

But look how sexy I am holding that cup in my nightgown wearing...lace gloves? Ziplocks?

Like a sexy Alice in Wonderland.

  • I drink maybe 1-2 soda cans a week, as needed.

  • i only do decaf coffee. i feel like the web's "one cup" is an actual cup (8oz) and i don't know where to even find one that small. there is still caffeine in decaf and lord knows i eat a lot of chocolate...

  • I have more than the 200 mg a day recommendation, and was the same with my last pregnancy. I get debilitating migraines in my 2nd and 3rd trimesters and my doctor would rather I drink caffeine if that helps keep them at bay than taking my pain medicine or winding up in the ER. Meh.

Ask your doctor and see what they suggest. I'd say as long as you're not downing an entire pot of coffee you're golden.

  • I drink 1 big cup (16 oz) of coffee every day. No pop really save the occasional diet coke. I've read 200-300 mg/day is fine.

  • I usually just drink one cup of coffee a day, but occasionally I'll have a pop or two with a meal.  I really don't pay too much attention to it.  Quite a few of my friends don't think it matters, and they have healthy, normal children.  I think as long as it's not all day every day it probably doesn't matter.  Ya know, moderation! ;)

  • My doc said keep it under 200 mg. I allow myself a 20 oz diet coke a few days a week -- that's only about 90 mg. (give or take -- I'm to tired to do math right now).

Keep in mind, the risk from caffeine is primarily early (1st tri) miscarriage, so in the 2nd tri, I'm not sure we even need to limit that much -- but it's a good excuse for me to rein in my soda habit. :)

Same. My cup is about 12oz which my doctors say is fine. I sometimes have decaf later in the day or witb dessert, but not often.

  • I typically have 2 sodas per day (41mg per can). I'm not really a coffee drinker, but if I do have coffee, then I cut one or both my sodas.
  • I try not to drink a lot of caffeine, but when I do it's usually in the form of Dr Pepper! During the first tri I didn't drink any.
  • Wow! I drink a lot of caffeine apparently! 16oz of diet dr.pepper a day. My OB would not be happy.

No, that's well under half the daily limit. You're fine. You just don't want to be guzzling a 2 liter bottle of coke a day. That's a problem.

  • Ok thanks! Sounds like I'm just fine with what I'm drinking
  • I try to drink just one cup of coffee in the morning, but occasionally I'll have a second cup of decaf or decaf soda in the afternoon.

Some Studies have shown no increase in miscarriage rates with up to five cups. But absolutely none have ever shown an increase in miscarriage rates with lower than 200mg

  • zero, but not because I'm some kind of saint. I gave up soda in September because I was up to like 6-20 oz bottles of Pepsi Max a day and I thought I'd be able to start losing weight and would feel better. It helped. My stomach no longer aches and I have slightly more energy although I attribute that to the baby being such a drain on me still. I feel like I'm stuck in the first trimester exhaustion phase.

  • 200mg daily is the recommendation, so unless you are drinking more than 5 cans of Pepsi a day (those have 38mg each), then you are definitely in the "just fine" zone. Most doctor's are more concerned with the empty calories and high sugar content in sodas, so be more mindful of that. But, a cup of coffee/tea and a soda everyday is perfectly fine. :)
