Intro and question

Hello everyone. My name is Melissa and I am 27. My husband is 28. We got a BFP on Jan. 25 and our EDD is Oct. 2. I have a question about the flu shot. I am not trying to stir up any controversy here. I have never gotten a flu shot in the past, nor have I ever gotten the flu. I'm not anti-vaccination; I just have never gotten the flu one. However, I have heard it is something important for pregnant women to get. I also heard some news stories this year about pregnant women dying from the flu, which is clearly not something I want to happen. My question is this...should I go get a flu shot now? Or should I wait and talk with my doctor at my first appointment which is feb. 14?

He has been vaccinated. His job has always required it. I will call and ask tomorrow though probably.

  • I cant link on mobile, but there was a several page cluster of a thread on 1st Tri about this a few days ago. There's a ton of wonderful science in that thread (and a little bat shit too, so ignore that) And several links to reputable articles about why they're important.

  • I'm not debating the science or anything like that. I'm not anti vaccination by any means, I just have never gotten a flu shot. I just was more wondering if it's something I need to do immediately, or wait until my appointment in a few weeks and talk about it. I'll head over to that board and look though. I'm new so this is the only board I've looked at so far.
  • Yeah, sorry...I'm bumping from bed and was lazy :) I think several of the posters there addressed safety in first tri vs second, etc. which might give you more info about what's recommended.

  • Alright, thanks. I'll try to find it. Maybe tomorrow though because I am getting tired and either way I won't be getting a shot tonight!
  • I'm of two minds about the flu shot.  I stopped getting it years ago because the 3 years that I got the flu shot, I got the flu.  When I didn't get the shot, I didn't get the flu.  With DS#1 I did not get the flu shot, and with DS#2 (new OB) she really pushed the shot and I caved.  Mostly it was so that DS#2 would have some of the protection since he was born at the end of January.  This time, I'm not sure.  Since I'm going with the same OB as last time, I'll probably get it.  Your OB should have more information and a way they like to handle it too.  Good question to ask at your appt!

  • I wonder if there is really point in getting it this late in the season? I'd ask your doctor about it. I got it the day before my bfp with my last pregnancy... which did end in m/c. I don't necessarily think the two are connected, but of course I have wondered from time to time. I will get it again next fall, but at that point I will already be in my third trimester.
