Holy mother of traffic y'all.

DH just spent 6.5 hours in traffic and then left his car and walked the last 5 miles. Atlanta's SnowCluster 2014!

  • Omg that's seriously insane!  How far did get in the 6.5 hours?

  • No Way!  Did you get any snow?

A classmates of DH's posted on FB how stores in GA were out of bread and milk this morning and how her kids were getting out of school early and a flake had yet to fall.
  • 13 miles. No one took this snow thing seriously bc everyone got shit a couple weeks ago when. The city shut down for 7 degree weather but not even a flurry. So school, business, etc didn't get called off until it had been steadily snowing and sticking for hours. And it was sleeting last night so the snow is just sitting on a layer of ice. There are buses still stuck on the road and schools where the teachers and the kids are having to sleep there! I would freak the fuck out if I couldn't get to my kid. But, in a heart warming turn, my FB is flooded with people offering a warm bed and beer and food to people who happen to be stuck.

  • @Arnegard :I feel silly telling you this bc don't you live in North Dakota (now I feel stalker-y), but it started in the city around 10, over that layer of sleet and snowed steadily until 8, so we have about 2 inches plus maybe half an inch of ice? We just aren't ready for that kind of shitty driving conditions.

  • A few years back, we had a snowstorm hit during rush hour. It took me 9 hours to drive 12 miles! It was horrible!

Wow, how awful!  DH flew into Atlanta this afternoon & is stuck right now in traffic trying to get from the airport to his hotel.

    @catycate,
    Stalk me all you want.
We have shit-tasktic icy/packed snow conditions right now too - but life does on as normal.

Add my DH to the list of people suck in traffic.  He's in downtown Atlanta & hasn't moved in an hour.  He said people are starting to get crazy where he's stuck!

This is our exact issue here. DH spent from 11:30-4:45 getting to the airport which is about 10-15 miles away from his office. Then he spent another hour going a mile then his car finally got stuck and there was nobody to help push him out/it was getting dark, so he walked the 1.5 miles up the hill to our old house where my brother in law lives. So hopefully he's going to be able to get home tomorrow when it's light and BIL has a 4WD. I'm sure his car has been hit a million times, it's like in the middle of the road I think.
  • My first H was from Atlanta and would tell me just an inch of snow would close down the entire city. LOL.  Stay Safe!

  • My BFF is traveling on the end of vacation through Atlanta. She's giving me updates that basically say they are at a standstill.  Been in bumper to bumper traffic since 4:30.  They've peed on the side of the road and put pull-ups on their potty trained toddler.  No where to eat dinner so I hope she's ok.  Going to bed worried about them.:(  The weather this winter is a nightmare!

  • One of the biggest issues is that today everything basically shutdown at 10:45...like every school in the entire area got out at 10:45 with 15 minutes warning. So, at 10:30 every parent in the whole area started on to the roads. Combine that with weather that nobody expected, a general lack of ability to drive in ice/snow and all our hills...yeah well, 6 hour drives.
  • I have been reading the news.  It is absolutely crazy.  It probably is not the snow causing the problems, but the ice.  Even up here in MA an inch of ice on the roads would cause major problems.  My husband's coworker is in Atlanta for a meeting.  She was stuck at a restaurant last night after trying to get to the airport.  He is trying to get in touch to see if she sheltered there overnight.

  • It is the ice and lack of any real salt truck to deal with the weather. Our school shut down for 4 days in December this year due to ice. The kids were ice skating on the driveway in sneakers.

DH finally made it to his hotel after 5 hours stuck in traffic.   Enough people turned around so he could turn around & get out another way.  The problem in his case was that there was a small hill & the cars at the front of the line couldn't make it up.  People were also not helping each other.  I've lived in Atlanta & can say I'm not surprised.  Especially in downtown.  The irony is that if people helped each other this mess could have been far less.

  • @JCM : really? I've heard lots of stories about people helping each other. Someone was passing out hats in my neighborhood. And I've my Facebook was flooded with people offering rooms and shelter. And in another neighborhood, they were passing out grilled cheese and coco. Not all Atlantans are jerks I promise!

  • Everybody has been helping each other here. It's been amazing.

@catycateit was probably because it was downtown not the suburbs.  My BFF lives in Canton & said everyone there was super helpful.
