Recommend your BC

I'm supposed to call my OB today and tell him which birth control I want so that he can order it and I can get it put in next week. He gave me two choices. Paraguard or Nexplanon.
Problem is I don't want either of these.. I already have very heavy periods so I don't want the paraguard because it supposedly makes it worse/longer. I don't want the nexplanon because I have a history of depression and I read it can make it worse. Plus I read it might make you gain a lot of weight and I sure don't need that either..

So my question is has anyone had any experience with the Paraguard or the Nexplanon?
Or any recommendations for BC that doesn't cause heavier periods, mood swings/depression, or weight gain? Or do they all do this..?

TIA.

  • Loestrin 24 FE! Saved my life, sucks that they are pills and you have to remember to take them but i didn't gain any weight, honestly I lost some in the beginning which was much needed since the previous BC I was on made me gain 15 pounds like that! And no acne, didn't have mood swings and my period only lasted 3-4 days and was so light if I forgot a tampon id be okay, my period originally is pretty heavy. I plan to get back on this after I'm done EPing. Something about having a device up my vagina just doesn't settle well with me. So IMO it's the way to go

  • I've never used it but I'm going on the Mini pill
  • How come he's only giving you those two choices?

I was on the depo shot for 3 years and loved it.

I'm not sure. I think because my insurance covers those and because I don't want to take the pill because I will forget.
But I guess he didn't listen when I said I have a history of depression and a heavy period. He always rushes me and now I don't really know what to do :/

  • Condoms for us… I can't handle hormonal BC and rubbering the ducky works for us.

LOL. Never heard that one before.

Depo is no longer recommended for long term use due to loss of bone density.
My doctor said as long as I'm getting enough calcium and vitamin D it's fine.

  • My ob said that with paraguard, your period might get heavier but only temporarily. We're currently trying to decide between that and just condoms again. I can't handle any hormonal bc because it raises my bp. Condoms worked for us for 5 years so we may just go with that.

  • I have a diaphragm because eff hormones. The pill never worked great for me and I have a history of depression, as well. The diaphragm is awesome.

  • Condoms here, too. Once my period regulates, we will use charting/condoms as back up.

  • I took Yaz for years and it worked great for me. OB just rx'd me Nora-Be since I'm BFing. I haven't started taking it yet.

  • I had the Paraguard for 8 years with no complaints.
  • @mac2588 how long after you had it removed did you conceive? Did your period stay regular? I'm contemplating this but for possible short term (less than 2 years if we want a third) or possibly long term.

I had it removed in January and got pregnant in march. My period did stay regular. Thinking about getting it agin since my tubes couldn't be tied.
  • I'm also getting on the mini-pill but I forgot the name.

  • If you have a history of depression - be super careful. I went on seasonique in college and (without a history of depression) was horribly depressed. Have you had hormonal birth controls before? Most cause weight gain in many people, and can affect your mood. If your doctor won't listen to your concerns, find a new one. This is not something to not be able to discuss fully. Having BTDT with a horrible reaction- you need to have a doc that listens.

Anyway, not wanting to scare you or anything-I just want to stress the importance of discussing your concerns with a doctor who listens and can monitor you closely.

I had the implant for a year. I had heavy periods but they were short before having it in, after getting it not only was it heavy but I bled for 7 1/2 months straight. They then made me take bc pills to make the bleeding stop so it was pointless to have it when I was avoiding the pill to begin with. I also gained 70lbs after getting it. I am using the shot now and it's the only hormonal bc I've ever taken and not had nasty reactions.

Same here. Had the Mirena for 7 years with no period and no complaints. I also loved the depo shot (minus getting the shot itself.) I was on that for 3 years with no periods and no complaints.
  • ive had it 2x already between 2 kids and will be getting it again after my 3rd baby. loved it and no complaints here. tried the pill (yaz, yasmin, loestrin,) , mini pill, nuva ring , the patch, condoms and the shot and hated all of them. i couldnt do hormones at all.
  • Is Mirena an option instead of Paraguard? I have that and really love it. I'm ebf-ing too.

  • I just got the Skyla which is like Mirena but only 3 years instead of 5. Per my OB, Mirena and Skyla are both ok for nursing mothers. I EBF as well and got my skyla a week ago with no issues so far.
