Breastfeeding

If you have inverted nipples and breastfed, come in!

Have you used/tried these: https://m.target.com/p/medela-softshells-for-inverted-nipple/-/A-561213

If so, did they work? If not, did you find anything that did? Nipple shield?

Re: If you have inverted nipples and breastfed, come in!

  • I had basically flat nipples and my LO struggled to get a good latch.  He couldn't figure out where to latch on and its like he didn't believe me when I would put him at the right place.  We used the nipple shield for about 6 weeks before he was consistently able to latch without it.  When he had grown a bit bigger, (and some of the adhesions in my nipples broke so they poked out more) he was suddenly able to latch easily when he couldn't before.  If the shield is the only way you can get started BFing, don't despair.  Just work on dropping it when you can.

  • I used the Avent Niplette while pregnant (though not in the 3rd trimester). It wasn't comfortable, but it really helped reduce the invertedness of my nipples.

I didn't have problems once my LO was born, but if I did I would have used the Niplette for 5 minutes or so before nursing to draw out the nipple. If you already have a breast pump, you can use that instead to do the same thing.

    GL!
  • I did not use them. I pumped for about a minute before each time she nursed and it would pull the nipple out. After a week or two I didn't have to pump anymore..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • I used those and they were wonderful. The hospital gave them to me after lo we born. I wore them for two or three weeks and by then my nipples where less inverted and my supply helped keep them out a little more. So I haven't used them since 3 weeks PP and lo has been ebf and is now 11 weeks old. No latching issues. The only downfall to using these in the beginning was not being able to wear breast pads. I wore breast pads over these but it didn't really help. So the problem was that these catch your leaking (which was a lot due to engorgement in the beginning) and the little foam insterts didn't soak it all up so every once in a while I would bend over to pick something up and dump milk out the vent holes on top which really soaked my shirt. I tried to stay on top of dumping them out but sometime fell behind. Even with this downfall I would still recommend them.I plan on using them for future pregnancies.
