blood thinners....

I have a condition that puts me at higher risk of blood clots, never had one. My RE thinks I should be on blood thinners which is a shot every day. I have horrible memories of my mom being put in the hospital because of blood thinners. So I'm terrified but on the other side I don't want a clot. Anyone else in this predictament? I just don't know what to do.

Re: blood thinners....

  • Do you have factor V?

  • Heparin is safe in pregnancy and can be converted to lovenox later on.   It's better to be on the thinners than to end up with a blood clot in your legs, lungs, heart or brain.  The mom in texas that was just taken off of life support likely died of a blood clot to her lungs.  Safe than sorry sweetie.  Between your RA and your OB/GYN, it can be worked out safely and monitored.

  • I believe it's factor V. I'm just so anxious about it. @lindsayhilleary do you do the shots yourself or does your dh do them?

  • A little late to this post, but I had a Pulmonary Embolism a few years back so I, also, will have to go back on Lovenox in a week or so because I am at risk for clotting. It's really not that bad and you totally get used to it. It's not a really pleasant experience, but it's worth it to keep yourself and the baby healthy! It's usually a low dose blood thinner with very little risk of side effects. I hope that eases your mind a little!
