Fitness Ladies..question

I know it is recommended that you do not get massages in the first tri. What about self myofascial release using foam rollers laying on your back? Anyone know? I was going to do it with my trainer today and then told him I was actually not sure it would be ok and would find out.

I have an OB appt on Thursday, and I will ask then, but wondered if any of you ladies knew?

  • Pretty sure it's ok. I use a foam roller daily. I think the no massage is more for liability than actually hurting the baby. Maybe wait and ask your doc as I am not a professional!

  • im sure that's fine, and i can tell you that @luvbrettnizzy is correct that places won't do it for fear of liability if someone blames their mc on them... my best friend's husband is a massage therapist and got a certification in prenatal yoga so as long as they are certified in that you can get a massage whenever.  He has been helping me out with my first trimester woes for sure!

  • I am physiotherapist, and I use my foam roller almost daily to work out tightness in the muscles and fascia of my legs (I am almost 10 weeks pregnant and a dedicated cyclist). Check with your doc for peace of mind, but I don't think you have anything to worry about! Actually, just today a friend (mom of 2 and fellow physio) recommended stretching my upper back using the roll as a way to help with nausea!
  • I am a chiropractor and we have massage therapy in our office. I am been getting massages since the day I got my BFP. I usually go in once or twice a week. I haven't sent patients in for massage that early as well. I dont see an issue because there isn't really anything they can do to harm the baby at that point unless they are working on psoas which rarely happens. Foam roller should be just fine!

  • I've been foam rolling my legs and hip flexors weekly after my long runs, I didn't give it second thought because I don't lay on my back (I still do all ab exercises on my back, though). I actually feel like I should be doing it more often to help circulation since I sit at my desk all day! I'll be interested to hear if there are areas to avoid, etc.

  • Thanks so much guys! When I was perg. with DS, I didn't work out at all, so this wasn't even an issue. I will try to remember to post what the OB says!

I have been seeing a chiropractor since a back injury a few years ago. I told him as soon as I was pregnant and he never said anything about no more massages, the opposite actually! I still get back pain occasionally (from accident) and was hesitant to take my normal pain meds so the massages have really been helpful. I look forward to it every week. • Same as PPs - I get regular massages from my chiropractor's office.  The only thing they said is to make sure the therapist knows so they don't push too hard on my lower back.
