NTTGPR: Anniversary

The H and I are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this summer, holy crap!
He asked me today what he thinks we should do, and I honestly have no idea.  I told him maybe a big vacation? But I don't know where. I'm so indecisive when it comes to planning something like this.

What have you all done to celebrate bigger anniversaries, if you've had one?  Throw me an idea!
Also I'll throw in another for fun.. if you're married, how long have you been?

Re: NTTGPR: Anniversary

  • Our 10th anniversary will be in November. We were going to book a resort somewhere tropical, but it depends on whether or not I get KU in the next few cycles. If I don't, then that's our plan.
Aw, you're not too far from us! A few months. 10 is so exciting!
I was thinking of a resort. Then I thought a cruise would be nice. Then I thought it'd be awesome to go back to Hawaii (I was born/raised there). Then I thought somewhere in Europe. I have no idea what I want, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a trip of some sort. We love to travel :)

Wow, early congratulations on 10 years! A trip is a fantastic idea, I don't know how big you want to go, but even a nice B&B could be a beautiful time.

I've been secretly planning our 10 year anniversary: H has always wanted to go to Japan, so I have a hidden savings account I've been popping money into every month to start saving for it. I only started a few months ago, and I still have 5 years to work on it, but I like to set goals. I plan on telling him the year before, so he can save his vacation days at work. I've also signed myself up to learn Japanese... Oh dear.

We have our 5 year anniversary in March, and it'll be the first time I will get a babysitter so we can have a nice dinner out and maybe a walk along the beach where we were married, weather permitting.
@LilMonk- how exciting! That'll be a huge surprise for him.  I'm willing to go pretty big, since it's our 10th.  His time from work doesn't much matter.  He's a physical ed teacher at an elementary school (plus coach for a few sports).. he has summers off. And I can easily get around 2 weeks off from mine, I work part time and it can be flexible (I can get a sub for my classes, I teach dance).. 2 weeks would be the max, though (both for my job and affordability).

I've always wanted to go to Asia, but that's not hitting me right now for some reason.

  • Congrats on the upcoming anniversary !!  :)

We went to Negril Jamaica for our 1 year.  It was absolutely gorgeous there,  Hawaii would be at the top of my list if we could afford it.   Airfare alone is out of our budget.  Its just too far from us being on the east coast.    We will hit the 7 year mark this July  :)

  • Congratulations!

We haven't celebrated any huge anniversaries yet, we've only been married a year and a half. For our 1 year anniversary we just went out to dinner at a nice restaurant, had the top tier of our wedding cake, popped a bottle of champagne and watched our wedding video.

  • Nope, not opposed to a cruise!  I've been on one before, in my early 20's. (not with H). Had an awesome time!  He's never been on one, so that might be exciting for him :)

  • Our 10th wedding anniversary is in March but I don't think we are doing anything big. I wish we could though. Between building a house in 2012/2013 and possible fertility treatments ahead of us, money is tight. Perhaps we could do a long weekend trip.

  • When we were trying to figure out where to take this year's vacation (we settled on San Francisco if you missed my thread) MH had suggested NYC.  I didn't want to go in April because it wouldn't be the warm escape I was looking for, but I promised him that for our third anniversary next June we'd go to NYC.  Now his sister set her wedding date for June 13th, which makes me irrationally upset.  I want to go to NYC for our anniversary, dammit!  I want to kiss on the top of the Empire State Building on our anniversary.  Now I'm debating if we tell her we can't make it.  I know we could go later, but in my mind it's not quite the same.  And MH isn't real happy his sister chose a date 4 days after our anniversary anyways.  And sorry this became an AW post.  I'm just a little frustrated.

TL;DR We're going to NYC for our 3 year anniversary, was thinking Europe for a bigger one (5-10 years) since we've never been.
@mrsmechanic1 -NYC is an amazing place, one of my favorite cities.  We live just 3 or so hours away and go several times a year. LOVE it there so much!!!!  And I'm sorry you're frustrated. It's always hard when people plan their dates around yours. I would just go later, but that wouldn't bug me. I don't mind not doing things directly on their dates.

@WinningColors - building a house is ALLLLLL worth it, though, you're lucky!! :)

We are coming up on our 2 year in May. Not quite big enough for a big trip, even though last year for our first we went to the Lake of the Ozarks (don't be jealous people).

For a big anniversary (I'm going to try and talk my hubs into it for our 5th) I really want to go to Napa and have a wine tasting trip.

    ETA: Congrats on the 10!

  • We've been married just over a year (November 2012). For our ten, our idea is to go on the Orient Express train from London to Istanbul, or at least London to Venice. It's hella expensive, but I think it'd be a ton of fun. They also do some that are around Britain that look really fun.

  • April is our 5th anniversary. Last year we said that we were finally going to take our honeymoon to Paris if we weren't KTFU by income tax time. But we've had a bumpy year and it just doesn't seem as fun. Maybe we will do a mini cruise or a Vegas weekend. Save Paris for the 10th anniversary.

I think you should try to go somewhere exotic/different. Something you can talk about for the next 10 years.

  • Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary!   We'll also be married 10 years in July!  We'll probably have DD spend the night with her grandparents (I've never spent the night away from her) and enjoy a night out and maybe a nice hotel.

I say do a big trip while you are kid free and flexible!

This year will be 9 years, so next year will be the big one. On our 5 year anniversary we went to the ocean (Seaside, OR)  and stayed in a little hotel for a night, but we had a small child so we couldn't do anything big or too far from home. If all goes well with TTC, we will have a 6 year old (OMG this idea of DD being 6 is scary) and a very small child again at our 10 year, so we probably won't do anything fancy or big then either. Haha!

We wanted to go to Jamaica for our honeymoon but didn't, so at some point we'll go for an anniversary after were done having small children.
If you can afford to, take a trip to the most exciting place you can since you may not have the chance again for a while. :)

  • Congrats on 10 years! I don't think we'll do anything special this year for our fifth because we go to a sandals resort every other year. We love the inclusive scuba package they offer. So I feel like we need a really big trip for our tenth. Maybe a trip to Fiji?

  • Congrats on your upcoming anniversary!! I think exploring Italy or France for your anniversary sounds AWESOME! We have only been married a few months, so we haven't hit any major anniversary milestones. However, we love to travel together & have taken a ton of trips with Spain & Italy being my favorites thus far.
  • Congrats on the 10! We just celebrated our 2 yr anniversary in September. We got married on Cape Cod at a restaurant that has a function room right on the harbor. So every year, we go back there for dinner and stay at the quaint little inn we stayed at on our wedding night. It's my favorite tradition of ours :)

Our 10 year will probably (hopefully) be a little more than that though. Maybe somewhere tropical? We went to St. Lucia for our honeymoon and would LOOOOOVE to go back.

My brother and SIL went back to St. Maarten where they honeymooned for their 10 year anniversary, and they took their 2 kids with them and made it a family trip.

  • Thanks so much, everyone!! (and for sharing what you've done/plan to do- fun to read!).

I think we're throwing around something in the tropical regions, he mentioned Aruba. We've never been, and he kinda wants to hit up a place that's new to both of us. So gonna research that area today and see what I think/what I can find! :)

Our first anniversary is this summer and we are planning on a few days in NYC

ETA: for a big anniversary I would definitely take an international trip. Maybe Europe or the Caribbean

  • Congrats on 10 years! This thread is great- I love all the ideas. Since DH and I are on student budgets, local getaways have been our anniversary go-tos ;) Since you are ready for an epic trip, I agree with most others in this thread- go for it! International! Personally in the summer I would go for a non-tropical vacation (Europe, mountains, etc) since it's already hot at home. If you are going the tropical route, I suggest an all-inclusive resort for sure- unlike cruises, the AIRs include booze! ;) I have been to several Palace resorts- they are the bomb. The "Spa Palace" on the Riviera Maya was our fave ;)

For our five year anniversary trip we are thinking about splurging and either doing a more expensive resort or a more "exotic" location.

For our first anniversary, we went to a themed hotel for the weekend, and that was really fun.
