BLW /finger foods check in

What's happening this week?

Re: BLW /finger foods check in

  • Same 'ol, same 'ol here. E continues to devour anything you put in front of her within seconds, much like her dad, while V continues to exhibit signs that she'll be a slow eater like me.

New this week: grapefruit! They seemed to like it. They didn't even screw up their faces, which surprised me.

Last night I made a quiche from the BLW cookbook with the leftover lentils I had. Used a store-bought frozen pie crust though. It was really good.

    Tomorrow we're having cottage pie.

Next Friday is our 9 month pedi appointment and I confirmed with the office that they do test their iron levels, hopefully we're good there.

They are still not taking a lot of their bottles while I'm working so I'm currently pumping more than they're eating right now... But I'm not noticing a decrease in their nursing when I'm at home, just he bottle intake when I'm at work. I think we're going to try to move up to a stage 2 nipple and see if they're just getting bored with the slow flow...

  • New things we tried
    - fajitas, he loved the peppers
    - Green grapes.
    - Kiwi
    -Roast beef
-Cantaloupe, he didn't seem to like this.

He has pretty much mastered his pincer grip over night. Yesterday he still was hit or miss but tonight he got every piece he picked up into his mouth. He ate a lot more as a result of it!
Oh and we have be giving him oats for breakfast for the past week and now he is more regular.

  • During the day DS eats purees while at school, but we are pretty much all finger foods at home.  Loves chicken, avocado, yogurt and puffs. I also gave him some of my oatmeal yesterday morning and he seemed to like it.

  • L tried some new foods this week. He had kale, tofu, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and cheese. We made the saag paneer from the BLW cookbook. It was too bland for DH, but L loved it. I find it a lot more fun to cook for L than just for us.

  • So A has been having purees since she was around 4 months and at 6 months we started puffs and cherrios and she has been great! She pretty much mastered the pincer grip.

I have been trying to introduce new things to her but I am just so nervous about choking. I break things in small pieces and everything goes great.

I want to try toast sticks like many of you have but A has 5 teeth and I am so nervous that she is going to bite a big piece.

I made homemade waffles for breakfast the other day for DH and I and I broke some into cherrio sized pieces and she had a ball.

Sorry to hijack the post but my question is .. Do any of you have recommendations when it comes to foods that are more like wedges or stick shaped? The thought of choking will not leave my mind!!

  • ^ I agree with all of this. But @ALP514, if she has the pincer grip down, there's no reason you can't just keep cutting everything up for her; that's what I do because I'm scared if choking too. It's a little time consuming though.

  • Thanks ladies!! I think I will follow my gut and stick to small pieces. I just wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong by not offering anything bigger.

  • B is all about puffs and Cheerios these days!  I think I'm going to try streamed carrots (cut up into small pieces) and peas this week.

  • Stupid questions what size is small enough that they don't choke on it?

Ya C gets Large peices and "bites" off chunks but I was thinking about making shepherds pie and I wasn't sure if a kernel of corn was too big.

  • We're having shepherd's pie tonight! (Well, cottage pie). I'd think a kernel of corn would be ok. But she's used to Cheerios and Puff-sized pieces, right? Those are a little different as they both go mushy in the mouth, but how does she handle those?

  • C also eats blueberries whole so I think a kernel of corn should be fine. Thanks guys

This is what we are doing, too.  I send a pouch to daycare with a bit of whatever we had the night before and we do finger food at home.

She still doesn't have any teeth, so I think she's not actually eating as much as she would like to and our schedule is so crazy I have a hard time getting more than one solid meal a day.

  • Pizza was a big hit. We did sweetcorn, broccoli and mushroom with cheddar cheese. I gave her half of it here and she ate it all with some shredded chicken.
