We had Jeffrey's 18 month appt today. Jeffrey is still only saying mama and daddy, no other words. The dr said that receptive communication is more important than expressive communication right now and that it was a good sign that Jeffrey understands things that we tell him and can follow instructions, even if he isn't talking.
One big tip that I didn't realize: he said to cut out all screen time! I always give Jeffrey my phone to listen to YouTube videos when he is fussing, during diaper changes, and if we are going out to eat, plus we watch music videos for a half hour each night before bedtime (he loves to dance). The dr said he has seen so many cases where once the tv is cut off, the toddlers start talking! We will see if that helps and I am already bracing myself for his tantrums!
Re: Talked to dr about not talking
SO's cousin didn't say hardly anything until she was well over two. Her mother used the TV as a sitter and she didn't get a lot of interaction. She is 4 now and will not ever be quiet. I really don't think all little ones regardless of screen time talk at the same rate. Some are just very quiet and don't express themselves at first and I that is just who they are, nothing wrong with them at all.
This is very true. On the flip side DD1 watched TV and the tv is always on in the background. She started talking very early and very detailed. DD2 isn't talking as much. No TV won't hurt but try not to stress yourself out over no screen time at all. Our kiddos are still very young, try not to worry.
Oh, I'm glad that the dr isn't too worried. Like PP have said, all kids develop differantly. Cutting down on screen time may help. But don't be too hard on yourself if you still allow it at certain times.
Maybe try replacing your phone with something else during diaper changes or when you go out to eat.
Right now DD will not let me change her diaper if she doesn't have a book to look at! Drives me crazy if there are no books within reach or if they are all tossed behind her changing table. But it usually keeps her distracted. And I'll try to point out differant things in the books and see of she'll repeat (ball, dog, etc).
When we go out to eat I try to make sure I have books, crayons, and lots of foods for her too ... but DD really likes to people watch when we go out to eat. LOVES watching the waiters dance at Texas Road House! LOL!
GL! Keep us posted!

At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid. Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth. If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP. My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!
