Curious...first timer here

I am pregnant for the first time and I am curious on some things. I have been 4cm and 80% effaced for a week now, lost my mucous plug last week, had "bloody show" but just light pink last night, and the doctor could feel the baby's head at my exam yesterday...so far no signs of me going into labor though and it's driving me insane! I want my little guy here and thought these were good signs it'd happen but am I just overthinking it? I couldn't sleep last night due to back and hip pain and some mild cramps. I've heard of some people who can't even feel their contractions until their water breaks. I'm still working and that makes me nervous as well, but I can't take the time off just yet.

How long has anyone else waited after these labor signs to go into active labor?

  • Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I am 38 1/2 weeks, due Feb 7th so I know I still have time but the doctor makes it seem like I'll go really soon and it's getting my hopes up!

First of all -- you may get flamed for not introducing yourself.  Just a heads up.  We are a community of women and most of us have been getting to know each other since we got our positive prgnancy tests.  We are very much a give and take group -- we give support, we get support.

As a FTM I have no personal experience, however, being an RN I know it varies and baby will come when baby is ready.  Interesting that you are at a 4cm and your OB didn't send you to L&D.  4 cm gets you a ticket to L&D at my office.  4 cm typically means active labor.  But, that being said, every pregnancy is different and every doctor's office is different.  Wish I could be more help!

I was thinking this as well.  My OB does a mandatory trip to L&D at 4cm as well.
  • Sorry I am new at the whole posting thing...I am Heather and last week I had some ER visits due to pneumonia and that's when they evaluated me and found I was 4cm and 80% (last Tuesday). The Friday before that, I was 2cm and 70%. My doctor said there are some new rules about being 39 weeks or actively in labor and mine isn't considered active labor as of right now. I have had no contractions that I can feel and my water hasn't broke. I told him yesterday I wish they'd just keep me, but they couldn't. Fingers crossed I go soon!

  • I am feeling a lot better than last week, thank you! My doctor did my exam last Friday and yesterday but the Women's Unit at the hospital he's at did the evaluation last Tuesday evening. I was having contractions but couldn't feel them and they slowed down once I was able to eat and drink fluids.
  • I wondered the same thing as you, so I googled it and found this good explaination.

  • Thank you. I think it kind of weirds me out that the doctor felt the baby's head, but that I'm not having him yet...
