Trying to Get Pregnant

HELP -- HPT result mystery

Hi all --

This is my first posting.  I've been lurking on the boards reading the answers others have provided to some of the very same questions I had.  Thanks for all of your knowledge! :)

I now have a question that I'm having trouble finding an answer to...and I'm hoping someone can help me out -

I took a pregnancy test this AM (according to my OPK strips, I think I'm 9-8 dpo) and I'm expecting my period on Feb. 3rd.  The test I used was an early pregnancy test which can be used up to 5 days before your missed period.  Within 30 seconds, I saw a very faint line - I showed it to my husband who could also see it.  I think we both looked at the test and confirmed the line within a minute (maybe 2) after the test was done.  But when I went back to the test 5 minutes later you couldn't see the line anymore.  Now (a few hours later) I can't see even a remote suggestion of a second line.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them before?  If so, was it just the indentation on the test you were seeing, or was it just a really early and really faint positive?  I am going to take another test tomorrow AM to see if it is any different,  but the wait is literally going to KILL me! :)

I really didn't think I had gotten pregnant with this cycle until yesterday because I haven't had any symptoms - my boobs were sore at the time I ovulated, but that went away.  Since then I've had no symptoms.  Nada.  However, yesterday I was nauseous all day (which isn't totally abnormal for me this close to my period), but it seemed to be a little more than usual.  Then while I was cooking dinner I had this weird "pinching" feeling in my lower abdomen in a very localized spot.  I've never had this "pinching" feeling before - it didn't feel like cramps or  gas or ovulation pain...it was different and that in combo with the nausea is what prompted me to try a HPT this AM.  This is my first time trying to get pregnant, so I have no idea what to expect by way of my own pregnancy symptoms.

Anyone out there have a similar experience?  Your thoughts are much appreciated!

I had this happen to me one time like 8 years ago. It was a faulty test. The line showed up right as soon as urine hit it, then faded immediately.

ETA: try again with FMU and a pink dye test. Best of luck for tomorrow!

  • Thanks, Miracle.  Maybe I will go out and spend the money on the First Response test.  From what I've read, it sounds like that is the most accurate.  Seriously, waiting around is the worst!
  • What kind of test did you use?

I've had it happen before. It pools around the test line but then moves its way up the stick & the test line disappears.

Test again with a FRER. If it's positive, head on over to 1st Tri.

I've had it happen where it looks positive as the dye is moving across the test.

  • This happened to me with a Walmart cheapie a couple cycles ago. I watched the dye move across the test and then a blaring positive line showed! I was overjoyed but thought I should wait the appropriate amount of time anyway. When I returned: stark white.

What a cruel tease these tests can be. I'm so sorry. Here's hoping for a BFP soon!

  • I agree with PP that it may have been the dye still moving up.  Test again but don't look at the stick until the proper wait time (follow the directions on the box) has passed to avoid the mind fuck.

  • It wasn't a pooling around the test line - I've seen that before with my OPKs.  The dye moved on past it and there was definitely a lightly colored pink thin line for maybe a minute or two after the test was done.  But after that it disappeared.  It was an Answer Brand test.  I used this test for my last cycle and I've never had this happen.  However, I've only been trying for two cycles so it's not like I'm an expert!

My guess was that it was probably a fluke and not a positive, but I wanted to get some other opinions because the "wondering" was kinda killing me. :)

I will re-test in a couple says with a FRER.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts - it's very helpful!! ;)
  • That's the worst!  Thanks for your thoughts!!
  • Haha!  Thanks Hazel, I will do that for sure.  The mind fuck is not very nice!! :)
  • Thanks, Emerald.  I hope I get one soon too!! :)
  • The link the RayRay posted that Emerald started is actually SUPER helpful.  I guess this is really common.  Thanks, ladies!!
  • Ugh! That's the worst. I would agree with the PPs, test again tomorrow morning.
