1st Trimester

Threatened Miscarriage

Hi ladies.  I posted this on my BMB but I wanted your opinion as well.    (TMI)

I was diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage early this week.  I'm 5wks 4days today.  On Sunday i had very very light spotting of brownish blood.  Monday I had bright red blood, that was a lot (but didn't transfer to a pad, only when I wiped).  My OB brought me in for an u/s.  The could see the gestational sac, but couldn't make out if there was a yolk sac inside or not.  My ob wasn't concerned with the u/s because it was in the right spot (not etopic) and measuring correct for 5w2d.

Since Tuesday, i've continued to have small amounts of pinkish/ brownish blood when I wipe, and today its starting to turn redish again.  Which is continuing to add to my madness... :(

I am so freaked out.  I am really hoping everything is ok, but i am really nervous.  i go back on Tuesday...but the wait is driving me bonkers, and the continued spotting of course is not helping.

I just needed to vent, but if anyone has had similar expereiences to share, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Threatened Miscarriage

  • Any "problem" before 20 weeks is a threatened miscarriage. Dont freak yourself out with the term.

  • I had a "threatened miscarriage" at 5w 4d. I had terrible cramping and heavy bleeding so I went to the ER. Which this is the way i found out I was pregnant to begin with. They did a transnational u/s and all that and sent me home with a prescription for pain medication. I had to come back 2 days later for them to check my HCG levels to see whether or not my pregnancy was progressing. My levels more than doubled and today I'm currently 19 weeks. I have yet to do an anatomy scan and have only had one other u/s to check the dating of my pregnancy where everything seemed fine. So hopefully you'll continue your pregnancy. It doesn't always have to end badly. Stay positive and don't stress yourself out. Worrying won't get you anywhere. Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies. I think I'm more worried by the continued spotting... Not so much by the term.

  • I'm 12w along and have bled bright red blood like a period four times in this pregnancy (twice this week alone!) and brown spotting nearly every day. Yet, every u/s shows the Little One progressing just fine. At 8w, they discovered an SCH (bleeding in the uterus and a large blood clot on the placenta) At my u/s this week, it was gone.

I know how helpless and scared you must feel right now. I'm very sorry and I hope the bleeding calms down! Just remember that it doesn't always mean what you think it means, and you never know until you get it checked out.

  • I had blood at 7 weeks (it was decently bad bleeding I had to wear pads for 4 days) and cramping and was brought in for an ultrasound. They found a strong heartbeat but still diagnosed a threatened miscarriage.I was told pelvic rest until second tri and I took it very easy that entire weekend and anytime I had cramping at work I went and sat down for a few minutes.

I am 9 weeks 1 day now and things are progressing normally. The bleeding stopped after 4 days and I am extremely uncomfortable with all the uterine stretching. When I went back to see the ob he told me that usually when you see blood it's due to the placenta.

I don't want to sugar coat it for you. When i went through it I've heard tons of varying stories from women only seeing a spot of blood and miscarried to women hemorredging and the baby was ok. The best thing you can do though is put your feet up and relax until you start feeling better and/or the cramping and bleeding stop. (Stay away from the Internet and searching threatened miscarraige it will only make you worried)

  • i had spotting at 5 weeks 6 days and everything was totally fine -  they found a fetal heartbeat. Many women spot with no problems, sometimes it does indicate a problem. Good luck to you!

  • I had no spotting.... and a miscarriage. My neighbor bled like crazy..... and no miscarriage. We both had weeks of worries. Try not to jump to any conclusions.

It's difficult when something is happening in your body that you can't control. But it is good practice for things to come.... like when you get genetic testing and wait endlessly for results,... and when you go over your due date and no amount of castor oil will help..... and when your kid is sick with stomach flu and you can't make him better right away. GL!

  • @rae_dylanzmom. Oh yeah.. I'm very familiar with dealing with things out of my control. When my son (also named Dylan) was 15 months, he was dignosed with Stage 3 cancer...and had no symptoms.. We found out on a fluke. On a side note... The bleeding has continued since.. Not constant, but not period heavy...no clotting or tissue. It's hard not to get discouraged.. But I'm preparing myself both ways for Tuesday. Thank you ladies for all your comments.. I appreciate them all greatly!

So sorry to hear your experience with your son. I went back and looked at your siggy and wow, that must have been difficult to go through. I'm sorry if my post came off as condescending. It's sort of been my mantra of the past few weeks as I try to not worry over symptoms and/or loss of symptoms. My appointment is also Tuesday, so look forward to checking back with you. GL!

  • no worries @rae_dylanzmom I hope your appt goes well.

Mine went ok... they now can see a yolk sac (barley), and my gestational sac has gotten larger. so thats is promising.  I'm doing the 2 day HCG beta test starting today as well.  Hoping for more definitive news next week at my next follow-up appt.

  • @RebeccaRyan.... Sounds like promising news on your end. Maybe not the all-clear you'd like, but things moving in the right direction.

So I am going through an insurance nightmare, and still haven't an appointment yet. I actually feel fine (and pregnant), so I am trying to remember how I didn't worry when I was pregnant with my DS (pre-miscarriage) and channel that feeling.

Still waiting to actually get an OB that Anthem will get to take me (they have NO OBs in-network within 25 miles of me... and the ones 30 miles away are non-profit clinics with caseworkers and strange procedures that sound more like Planned Parenthood than a doctor's office.) So it will probably be next week (9 weeks) before I see a doctor.

Looking forward to our updates next week!
