  • Wow I'm feeling dumb... Don't even know what NST is. Guess that means I don't know for my poll answer.

  • I was originally told I would have to start them at 36 weeks, but now they are saying that was never the case and I am to start once a week at 34 weeks, with the likeliness of increasing to twice a week later on...

    Why...

Because I am overweight, no GD, no High Blood Pressure, no excessive weight gain. Not to mention, just 3 years ago when I had DD I was also overweight, with no complications, carried to term, had a vaginal delivery and healed up quickly after a 2nd degree tear and yet didn't need NST's then.

@karib509 It's a non-stress test, and it's where they put a strap around your stomach that measures LO's heartrate, I think.  Normally it takes about 20-30 minutes.

I'm getting them weekly from 34 weeks due to high blood pressure/congenital heart issues and LO's possible kidney issues.

  • According to my OB, I'll be getting them twice a week starting next week (36w) because I'm on insulin for GD.

  • One NS test  and one BBP once a week once I hit 32 weeks so I haven't had them yet, right now I'm just getting ultrasounds every two weeks.  Due to my age and increased risk of placental failure.  Never had any extra monitoring in my other pregnancies...

I chose every week, but I actually get them every other week. I get BPPs in the alternating weeks so he's still monitored. Just got back from one this morning!

eta: oh, didn't answer the second question. I am getting them because of his DS. Chromosomal abnormalities have a much higher chance of still-birth or placental degradation since both the placenta and the cord have an extra chromosome too.
  • I had my BPP this week and should start NSTs twice a week next week (34 weeks) until I deliver. This is all due to my prenatal hypertension and the medication I take to keep it lower.
  • I start Thursday and then next week will be twice a week.  I have GD with a history of PTL.  I'll be 33 weeks on Thursday.

  • I'm almost positive I won't be required to do then unless something comes up. I had one once with DS when I complained of decreased movement around 32w. That was when we notice the contractions had started.

  • I picked SS. I've been getting them twice a day since 30+3 since I'm sitting in the hospital. Basically they aren't really doing much with me here, and running NSTs makes them feel like they are doing something!

  • I have not had a NST with belt hooked up for monitoring, but I have gotten weekly ultrasounds, where they test the baby on an 8 pt scale, every week since 30 wks. (I'm going for my 34 week one today). I am 36 yo with a kidney disease, a lapband, and suspected GD (meds) so I have had lots and lots of testing and ultrasounds throughout this pregnancy.
  • I started getting them yesterday (32 weeks) and will go twice a week for the rest of the pregnancy. My OB's office says it's standard for twin pregnancies.
    Induction of mo/di twin boys scheduled for 2/24! Pregnancy Ticker}
  • Started at 30 weeks. TTM.
    Weekly NST.
    Bi-weekly BPP.

Due to age and increased risk of placenta degradation.

    I had a few with baby#1.
    Due to PTL, shortened cervix.

  • Not this time (as long as everything continues to go well). With my first pregnancy I had them twice a week starting sometime in the third trimester, I can't remember exactly when, due to hypertension.

  • Weekly nst and bpp starting at 34 weeks due to the baby measuring in the 97th percentile. Ugh, today's nst took over an hour bc the baby wasn't cooperating! Oh well, better safe than the sorry!
  • I started NST twice per week plus BPP once per week at 32 weeks (I'll be 35 weeks tomorrow) because I have lupus. Baby performs beautifully at every single one and I'm not having a flare or anything so I started to feel like it was overkill and a huge waste of my time until I went in today and they discovered my fluid is low during the BPP. I will be going back on Friday to have another BPP to see if there is any change. Guess it's a good thing I'm going through all these extra steps after all.

    @AriaAmante143
My LO had the hiccups during the NST today too. So cool to actually hear it!

I don't know how you feel about your doctor, but I hate him/her for you.  Having some extra pounds can predispose you to certain problems, but unless you have an actual complications like GD or hypertension being on the heavy side doesn't automatically make you high risk.  They need to teach some basic damn statistics in medical school.

    End rant.

  • Not until I'm overdue - just like last time.
  • No NST plans yet. Just a weekly ultrasound to check the baby, placenta, and cord starting at 36 weeks because I have clotting risk factors and have been on Lovenox the whole time.

  • @kaking78

It is very frustrating as I didn't have to do any of this just 3 years ago and had perfectly normal pregnancy, and when you decline any testing they making you feel guilty.

This time the OB Practice/Dr. who I had before has been not so fun and the added testing hasn't helped.

According  to ACOG guidelines I didn't come across much that said there was a need for NST's or anything like that, but rather I should be paired nutrionalist during pregnancy. That was never suggested to me.

Needless to say, I am pretty convinced our family will be complete after this pregnancy. We will have one of each, and I'll be 31  in just a few short weeks, so by the time we'd consider to have kids again, I'd probably still be overweight, and 35+ years old and told to be on bed-rest for 9 months...

I am more and more convinced its an insurance thing and what they can do to get more money. I  am also thinking that as soon as I hit 36 weeks they are going to try and bump my NST's to twice a week.

  • I'm not required to get them. However, I have had one due to decreased movement, and will have them again if the needs arises for them. Better safe than sorry if I feel like something isn't right.

  • I will be 32 weeks tomorrow and go for my first one this week. I'm having twins so that is why I have to have them done.
  • Twice a week starting at 33 wks due to my GD.. My 1st NST will be this friday.
  • I've gotten them once a week since 30 weeks (currently 35 weeks) and will continue through the baby being born! We also get BPP's done every other week. The baby has only one artery in its umbilical cord (SUA) so they are monitoring the baby for growth on a weekly basis. So far so good! :)
  • GD but diet/exercise (ok, diet; my exercising has ceased) controlled with baby measuring fine.  I'll start NSTs at 36 weeks.
