OMG Lice!

Well that didn't take long!  There is a lice infestation at daycare!  DS does not have them yet but I just got a text that three of the other kids do.  I am totally freaking out and just called and left a message at the peds office to see what I should do if he brings them home.

Re: OMG Lice!

  • BLAH - I forgot that lice existed!! I am NOT looking forward to the eventual lice outbreak.  Good luck!  I'm interested in hearing what the ped says about lice with babies.

  • Awful! I hope you get to avoid the hassle of lice removal. Seems like a giant pain.
  • The nurse just called me back and said that you can use Nix on babies over two months.  Seems like a pretty harsh chemical for a baby head this young.  I will need to look it up.  She said to call back if he actually gets them and they will walk me through the step by step process to get rid of them.

  • I have a ton of experience with lice - not on me, thankfully!

I work with children, so it's a given that it's something we deal with - especially since the children are residential.

I am a big fan of using Pantene conditioner. It suffocates the lice makes the eggs slide off the hair shaft with a lice comb. Removing lice is time consuming, but can be done if you are methodical and quarantine things effectively. Putting things in the dryer on a high temp will kill any lice.

Fingers crossed you don't have to deal with them.

Also, a big reason that some children keep getting lice is because their caregivers don't think to check themselves. So make sure you get checked/treated too, if your little one ends up getting them.

  • Coconut oil knocks them out, and I know most of the moms on this board already use it for a variety of things.  Just talking about lice makes me itch.  LOL  I constantly check DS1's hair.  He goes to public school so there are often outbreaks.

Ahhh, lice on babies?! I thought that was a preschool thing.
The kid who brought them to daycare has an older sister in elementary school and she brought them home.  So far a 4 year old, 3 year old, and 2 year old have it.

And yes I am totally itchy now.  I told my office mates and they all slllooowly backed away from me like I have the plague lol.

And that would be why you don't tell your office mates you might have lice.

Ha, so true!  Unfortunately they all witnessed my freak out when I got the original text.  I work in a very small office with seven people stuffed in it.  We don't have many secrets around here...

That is one of my nightmares.  I send my daughter to school every day with a ponytail and hair sprayed with Circle of Friends Lice Prevention Spray.  I read somewhere that ponytails are better for prevention so that's what we do.  I feel bad sending her with her hair the same everyday, but whatever I can do to prevent I will.  I also use to wash her hair with the Circle of Friends lice prevention shampoo, but I ran out and have not replaced yet.  This post just reminded me I need to get on that STAT.

  • This is the one thing I do not miss about teaching. My head itches just thinking about it. Ponytails are, indeed, your friend. As are those lice combs. I would get one and comb LOs hair with it every day (and your hair as well)
Hmmm- I actually have one here. I bought the "terminator" comb when she first started school so I would have it here and not have to track on down last minute if it ever happened.  I never thought of using it as a preventative measure, but I will start.  Have an idea yet of how paranoid I am about this, lol?  If you told me walking backwards and clucking like a chicken all day would prevent lice, I would be doing it.

  • Tea tree oil repels lice! You can buy a tea tree shampoo (like Paul Mitchell) or put a few drops of the oil in your LO's shampoo/body wash.

  • I heard tea tree oil can help prevent getting them. I believe adding it to shampoo and/or combing a little through their hair keeps them away.
