Breastfeeding fine, but not able to pump

Thanks for the post! I've been breastfeeding exclusively for the past 2 days. I just broke my baby's nipple confusion (she was in NICU for a week and is now 8 weeks old). Yay me! But I cannot pump any milk at all . . . I know my breasts are producing enough milk. She is producing enough dirty diapers a day, but whenever I try to pump to get some milk to store I get an ounce or less. Is this normal? Anyone else having this problem?

  • AmyG posted about setting the pump levels too high, that it can collapse your milk ducts. I turned mine down and now get way more milk and faster.

It's definitely normal if you're pumping post feeding. Is that when?
not all the time, but even if it is prebreastfeeding I still yield the same amount .

I will def try to lower my settings. Thanks ladies!

Try massaging, heating pad on your breasts, drink hot liquids before pumping, record your baby crying and listen to that. Flipping through pics may help with letdown too. These are all suggestions from my lc.
Will do! Thank you for your advice!

  • I tried pumping my other breast after a feed today. I tried for 20 min and nothing happened. Even looking at my LO. I was so disappointed. But then I put my LO back on my original boob and tried again and got 3oz in 7 min. So if you can, try feeding and pumping at the same time. Made a HUGE difference for me!

This! Nursing and pumping at the same time really helps in this kind of situation.

  • All of the PPs suggestions are great. I'd also add that I only pump about 2 times a day. I was trying to do more, but I was stressed out by how little I was getting. When I pump early in the morning and when she naps I get larger quantities. When I do pump after a feeding and only get a little I tell myself it's hind milk. BFing and pumping have been just as much of a mental as physical thing for me.

  • I have also used a manual pump to get things going as well. You can angle it and since you control the pace if suction, it can be easier to get milk out.
