Colic/fussiness support group

Hi, my name is Missy and I have a fussy baby.

Man, this stage is not for the faint at heart. I've been in denial about his fussiness, in hopes that I could will him into being an easy baby, but I have finally given up. Yes, my baby is fussy. Not all the time, but when he is it is so tough. This is another stage that I've blocked out since DS1 is older. Yesterday, we had fussing/crying off and on from 4 until 8 pm. Today, I'm on my own and the fussing is already pretty rough, He's napping on my shoulder now and I'm just hoping he stays asleep so I can finish my coffee and breakfast.

Who else is with me? How are you staying sane these days?

  • She's been crying since 8:30am, it's now 10:30. I have changed her a few times now, fed her, rocked, burped, changed her position a million times, put her in the vibrating chair.... Now I am feeding again... All I want is for her to sleep a hour so I can clean my floors and get some laundry... I'm always alone during day since DH works. How am I staying sane? I tell myself DH will be home at some point to take her and that this fussy attitude isn't forever, but my goodness, I wish I could figure out how to make her sleep during the day...

  • My baby has been super fussy the last few weeks to the point where I had a nervous breakdown and started feeling really anxious and depressed, so I'm going to my GP about possibly taking meds since I've had major anxiety problems my whole life. I know I won't always have a perfect baby but the night fussing complied with the not sleeping a lot is getting to me bad.

  • EVERY SINGLE EVENING. Nothing I do works. I know I am not alone in this but that doesn't make me feel any better when evening comes and nothing I do seems to help him.

    I'm sorry this is bringing out your anxiety. It's so tough to hear the crying. Hopefully between meds and the baby getting past this stage you'll start feeling better. I keep telling myself we're at the peak and if will get better.

  • I also have a very fussy baby. I'm always alone bc DH works crazy hours. I think he has silent reflux but nothing I'm doing helps. He is not often awake without crying and he is 2.5 months. Hoping this will pass bc I am exhausted.

    For the most part, if Julia is awake, she is fussy. It has been like this since she was a week old (she'll be 4 weeks tomorrow). The worst is usually from late afternoon/early evening until 11-11:30pm. We feed, burp, change diapers, change positions constantly, walk around, go for drives, anything to quiet her for a few minutes. I don't think it is colic because she can be consoled, it just has to be near-constant consoling. We usually get 10-15 minutes here and there where she is quiet. We watched Happiest Baby on the Block last night so I'm trying those techniques today and they seem to help a little. My only consolation is that at least for now, she sleeps pretty well at night. But the fussing for hours does not do much for my existing anxiety problems, though I'm getting more used to it. But I am going to make an appt with my doc to try to get some anti-anxiety meds to help me deal with it since I let my prescription lapse while I was pregnant.

  • We are dealing with the 6 week growth spurt and several rashes, including cradle cap that has spread to his face, ears, and shoulders. Treating these issues has led to better sleep for mom and baby, but he still cries and fusses a lot while he is awake. He wants to nurse all the time. He gained 2 lbs in the last month, so I keep reminding myself that his progress is worth being constantly attached at the boob.

  • DD cries pretty much anytime she's awake and not eating or being lulled by being held, rocked and listening to the oven vent on high. I cut dairy from my diet and that seems to be helping. She's also been put on Pepcid, but not sure if it's doing much or not. Poor baby gets hoarse from so much crying sometimes. My consolation is that she sleeps great at night once she goes down (6-8 hrs). Also they say colic/fussiness usually peaks around 6 weeks, which is where we are right now, and improves over the next 6-10 weeks.

  • When did your fussy baby come? DD just turned one month today, and the last couple of days have been brutal. She is Queen Fussy and will not sleep during the day unless she's being held! Hoping this is short-lived.

  • My baby is pretty fussy, especially at night. We can quiet her down, but it doesn't last-- she is a perpetual motion machine. DH and I will trade off and eventually she'll fall asleep (if we're lucky). Sometimes, if she gets tired, I can nurse her to sleep. I know that some would say this is a bad habit to establish, so I try not to do it all of the time, but if nothing else works, we'll do it. I will say that her fussy periods are getting shorter,so I'm hoping we're moving out of this phase. But I feel like I'm in one of those actions movies (like Speed) where if you stop moving, or bouncing, or get into the wrong position, the bomb goes off. The only advice I have is to try everything (I'm sure you have been), and sometimes it helps to go back to something that didn't work before (swing, bouncer, etc.). Also, if you have a DH/SO/partner, have that person spell you when he/she can. My DH and I will sometimes set a time (e.g. If she's still fussy in 45 minutes, you take her). I find I can stay sane if I have a break time in mind, and that also expands her soothing options.

    We're in this boat too, it's been about a month of him having a nightly freak out for several hours usually, so frustrating and exhausting.

  • This is us too! DH is a CPA and tax season has started so we're alone a huge portion of everyday! And the crying unless she is eating...inconsolable! 8.5 weeks.... I hope it gets better soon
  • Zantac has done wonders for her reflux fussiness, but she still has her moments. Namely, 4am. Every. Freakin. Day. Poor DH. :/

    For infants it has to be prescription; it's a syrup. LO is 4 kilos; I am giving her 15mg with an oral syringe twice a day.
  • We had this also.  What calms is a moving target, but a few things have stuck for a week or more:
    * 45 degree angle for 20 minutes after feeding
    * swing chair
    * pacifier
