Baby Names

Could I still use the name Alexandra?

My FBIL's name is Alexander. Both FI and I love the name Alexandra. Is it unusable? Would it be weird?

FWIW, FI and his brother are best friends.

Honesty is welcome! Thanks! :)

Re: Could I still use the name Alexandra?

  • People would assume you are naming the baby after him. Which isn't a bad thing but weird if that is not what you want to do and they are best friends.

  • I probably wouldn't.

  • If you both love it, go for it!

You can always use a NN if you want (Alex, Allie/Ally, Lexi/Lexie, Alexa) or a variation (Alexis, Andrea, Alice, Elise, Alexandria, Alessandra).

  • I probably wouldn't use it unless you actually wanted to name your baby after him. But if you love the name then go for it!

  • Thanks for the input, everyone!

Definitely gives us something to think about. Now we're thinking we'd use it as a MN and use it for him.

  • I don't think it's a big deal, and if your FI and his bro are so close, why would "naming after" him be a bad thing?

I would think the only concern would be if they did not get along.

This is a good point! Honoring him would not be a problem for me or my FI. The only thing I could think of being a concern is honoring FI's brother and not mine since my brother and I are also very close. I don't think my brother would feel slighted, and if we did end up using Alexandra for either a FN or MN, I would then like to honor my brother for our second child.
